Malware Surge Hits Android: Adware, Trojans and Crypto Theft Lead Q2 Threats

Android devices are facing an increased uptick in adware, infostealers, and trojans from malicious apps in 2025. Notably, these apps are almost all entirely found within the official Google Play Store or from the pre-installed apps of cheaper, low-end OEMs.

While apps hosting intrusive ads have topped the charts, banking trojans and firmware-level cryto stealers have surged in popularity. The latter could be found among modified versions of WhatsApp and the firmware of said low-cost phones.

I’ve just helped a neighbor uninstalling an adware on an Android phone a few hours ago. It disguises itself as the official Google Photos app and play ads every few seconds regardless of whatever you’re doing.

I forgot to check where it is installed from, unfortunately.
