Linux US market share at nearly 5%~

This mentality is what’s wrong with the OSS community. You didn’t wake up one day able to code and knowing everything about *nix. Why should we expect new people to do so? New people also bring opportunities for bug fixes that only happen in certain situations and new ideas. Elitism only serves to fracture communities in the long run once new people leave to form their own projects instead of helping with older ones due to the hostility they faced.

Was Gentoo your first distro? If not, would you even have gotten into Linux if you had to do a Gentoo install as your first Linux experience?

Newbies go complain in support chats and forums all the time, raising awareness about potential bugs that the developers wouldn’t have encountered

Not wrong, but please don’t talk about the “OSS Community” as one monolithic group that share the traits you mentioned.
