In very many universities, research labs and public administrations across the world, the staff is on Linux. Maybe your friends are the exceptions, but generally ITs saying it’s easier to manage a Windows fleet are just not good at their job (and often, they haven’t really tried to learn something else). I admit it’s easier to believe your Windows fleet is well managed, but often it isn’t. For security only, configuration is so complex and irrational that it’s very difficult to get it right. As a pentester, I usually find my way much more easily in Windows/AD because there are too many settings for ITs to control, and chances are they have overlooked one. As a cybersecurity engineer, I just refuse to work in Windows ; too complicated, I would never dare say a client “you can count on what I made for you”.
