Hello everyone! I hope you all are having a fantastic day today. I wanted to ask about Back-up Capabilities. I want to back-up my Whatsapp chats, and Contact lists, and other miscellaneous things to Proton Drive [since, it’s more privacy - friendly] rather than Google Drive. Is it possible?
I’ll be very grateful for any suggestions, or help!
I don’t believe the app or the service itself today has this capability to do so as a feature they provide. But you can most likely do this manually at best.
Proton Drive as it stands is not a back up service. So what you’re asking and assuming the way you’re asking does not and cannot work with Proton Drive.
You can however back up your files and photos easily. Just not the OS data as a traditional backup service provides.
Proton Drive indeed doesn’t even have a CLI/programatic way of doing backups like a traditional AWS S3 bucket or any other VPS would allow you to do.
It is meant to be used in a specific way and can sync photos (and other things?) but beyond that, you can’t do much. Not sure but there is a long backlog of features asked by the community, maybe the Proton team will give it more attention at some point?
EDIT: found the exact thing you’re looking for just here. Feel free to bump it up. ![]()
Or explore other requested features by the community. ![]()
In the meantime, feel free to use some recommended encryption tool for your files and upload it on your server of choice. Still the best if you don’t have your own NAS.
You could also just backup those on some SSD I guess? If not critical, might be decent-ish.
Of course, if you can use a command line you can go crazy with rsync, borg and plenty of other tools, world is your oyster!
Yeah, you can.
But now you will need to configure it manually or wait for release
See
But now it is half-baked
You could also do it in different steps, but it would be a bit manual.
First you would need a tool to backup whatsapp chats and contacts or anything else you’d like. I used rerware mybackup pro in the past, but it’s not FOSS and I’m sure there are better options now. A duck search points to Neobackup.
Then you would need to export those backups manually to Proton Drive.
Yeah - seems very disappointing that Proton Drive doesn’t have these features natively.
I also hope that Proton adds these features in the near - future. Regardless, thank you for your help!
Thank you for your suggestions! Yet, I would want to Opt for encrypting services for Cloud Storage. Seems like the better option ![]()
Well it’s not a backup service so I’m not expecting it to work like this. Also, storage would easily fill up once you start using it like this and I don’t have a need for such types of back up to be made to the cloud. Not everything needs to be to the cloud.
Depends how critical is the data. But incremental backups are also a thing, yet not sure if feasible with WhatsApp.
I consider all data to be critical enough if you even want to have a backup of something.
It’s about threat modeling again as it mostly almost always comes down to it - if one needs to backup everything encrypted and to the cloud.
I backup things to but it’s offline and encrypted. My primary point is that cloud storage and backup is not ideal or even needed for everything unless one has such needs. Perhaps OP does. I still wanted to make that clear since they may not know about it.
Well, data is very important in the modern, privacy-invasive world. Yet, I do also agree that sometimes offline [and encrypted] storage can be a much more ideal option. For me, I do not have the threat model that urges me to encrypt EVERYTHING. The reason for my questioning was because I am trying Proton Drive [for the first time] and thought if there was an option for more broad encryption, it would further protect me from passive attacks.
I appreciate all the help i got! Thank you.
