Proton Duo announced, you can lock in a price of 15$/month for 2 Proton Unlimited accounts. Pretty great deal imo, glad to see Proton opening more payment tiers.
They really need to ramp up their cloud and photos features and software support across platforms (e.g. Linux). Otherwise it’s just a dumb, expensive storage.
I usually find it useful to store documents, backups, files I want to share, etc. For photos I mostly use Ente. But yeah I agree, making linux platform not have feature parity is not that great. I would love if Proton could make the photo backup a functional gallery and not just a “backup”.
Tbh, I think they should align the functions they offer across all platform first.
Back to topic, the pricing seems unattractive to me (well, pricing for 12m is never attractive).
If the idea was to be affordable they should have released two tiers of Proton Duo like they have for the individual the Mail Plus and the Unlimited.
A promotional Proton Duo Mail Plus would be the right fit for my scenario. Although I see that many will benefit from the current promotional Proton Duo (Unlimited) attractive price tier compared to have two individual Proton Unlimited.
I used the family plan to convince a buddy to use a more privacy respecting service. I had been wanting to upgrade for more storage but couldn’t do the $30 a month, however I could do $20 and let them pay for $10 a month with the VPN being their onboarding point for streaming. I imagine you could use this the same way for less money.
I’m not sure.
I don’t need extra storage. I don’t use Proton Drive (I store things in my server). The Proton Mail I keep it organized deleting the emails and doing external backups. I don’t use the Proton VPN out of the free tier (I prefer to use Mullvad or iVPN). The email is the only thing that retains me in the Proton solutions. My partner would be adopting the same approach, therefore I don’t see a reason to jump in a more expensive tier.
In summary, the Proton Duo, would be interesting for me if they would create a version of the Mail Plus.
100% agree. My wife and I just need the very basic Mail/VPN offering each so if there was a DUO plan that matched the first tier, but for two accounts, we would sign up.
How much do you want to pay for this? Two Mail Plus accounts is already only $8/month, which is about half of this new Duo plan already. Even if you saved an additional whole $2 (which I think would be too much of a discount tbh) that’s only $24/year, not exactly an amount worth caring about.
If they’re going to add another plan, what they should probably have is a 6 user “Mail Plus Family” plan with 100GB storage for ~$15/month. That would be pretty great for families who need email but not storage.
Or make a single user Unlimited plan with 3Tb for $20 a month.
Really the lesson is that Proton should sell their plans and storage separately
The $4 individual is for the yearly plan. The monthly plan is $5. If they would give those $2 discount would be quite good and generous like you mentioned but as early adopters I feel that would be a nice incentive and help to justify paying another VPN service. Specially because like you mentioned they should have plans separated since many may not use a lot of things that are in the bundle. Additionally, please consider that in some countries, each added service can represent an outrageous amount to commit to, and those discounts would be greatly appreciated.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject.
I tried to look up “Mail Plus” and found a paid for product offering from Yahoo. Is that the e-mail service you recommend?
I recently switched from Gmail to Proton with the hopes of a more secure privacy vs. free Yahoo, GMail or Hotmail/Live accounts.
Proton Mail Plus
Oops. Thank you! That makes sense.
It is interesting that Yahoo has the same product offering name…
