Installing Whoogle on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W in 2025

I had to update my 2024 post.

Main differences today:

  • 32 bit OS (no desktop) had Whoogle homepage working but searches led to a server 500 error. The 64 bit OS without desktop does work
  • You can’t just pull the whoogle-search docker image from GitHub anymore but have to build your own
  • There has been a warning on the Whoogle GitHub page about JavaScript since January this year. Not sure why there isn’t an update on that

I hope the article is useful!

Cool, but why suffer with a Pi when you can get a more powerful x86 machine for the same price (or even free if you do dumpster diving) and run way more stuff on it and do it without the compatibility headaches?

I was looking for a privacy project to try on the Pi and found Whoogle. I do like that it’s a dedicated little thing in the house. I prefer running servers etc. from their own machines. That way, when your PC crashes, things you’ve set up (Nextcloud, Monero node, Whoogle) keep running.
