How to Reset Your YubiKey and Create a Backup

Hi Everyone! This week’s article is a detailed tutorial for YubiKey users on how to reset a key and create a backup of it!

To follow this tutorial, you will need to have 2 YubiKeys from the Series 5, 5 FIPS, 4, or 4 FIPS.

Good to see this bumped up - I had almost forgotten this existed. I guess time to reset my keys as well that I’ve been postponing to do since having moved to software passkeys for convenience.

Wow, that was a bigger job than I thought. Now all my 2FAs are switched from Proton to YubiKey. While I was at it, I also did a major cleanup and deleted a bunch of useless accounts. Backups have been made multiple times and encrypted with VeraCrypt. The Yubico Authenticator is nice and lightweight, and VeraCrypt is an awesome tool! I still need to make a backup of the YubiKey, but that’s a piece of cake compared to the rest of it..
