How come stand alone GPS units aren't recommended?

Just wondering how come stand alone GPS units, like Garmin, aren’t recommended as a GPS tool? I get they have an extra cost that not everyone can afford but they have their benefits over using a phone.

-can use without an account

-can turn off telemetry

-only receives a gps signal and doesn’t give one out (can’t be tracked)

-maps can be easily updated on a public wifi if threat model needs

-Garmin has a decent privacy policy

-certain models have traffic enabled without using Bluetooth to your phone.

Unless I’m missing something, I think they could be a useful tool.

That’s the case for all satellite positioning system. This will change in the future with new satellite, but right now only one-way communication.

We are not going to recommend any tools that has telemetry by default especially if you talk about sensitive info like location patterns and so on.

Last I checked Garmin isn’t open source so we cannot really validate the claims of “no telemetry”
