How can phone manufactures turn user devices into a brick remotely?

I came across this video below, but as far as I know the common method used by phone manufactures is to blacklist the IMEI preventing it to connect to cell towers, make calls, send texts and use data as they should only get a “No Service” in Network name. But how could Samsung disable the phone entirely and just make it possible to turn it on only to see the disabling notice and nothing else?

If you’re running their OS on their hardware, they can do anything.
