Hi y’all. Do any of y’all know of configuration guides to minimize harm for any of the OSes that have heavily integrated AI? I’m specifically curious about guides for Android and iOS but others would be welcome too.
What kind of harm are you thinking about?
The fact that iOS by default allows Siri full access to every one of your apps to train Apple AI, for example. There are other examples from other OSes, but essentially this is one of the most privacy invasive features possible, and pretty much every closed source OS is doing something like this. The president of Signal has been speaking about it to raise awareness of the pretty significant threats it poses. I’m not am expert on closed source OSes so I’m looking for guides I can send people to ensure they can turn off features like this to the extent possible.
Do you mean agentic LLMs that have full access to the underlying OS?
I guess? I think I just explained what I’m looking for pretty accurately… I’m not sure the exact technical phrase to best describe it.
Are you asking specifically for iOS?
Because than I might be the wrong person to give you advises. If it is about GNU/Linux or Windows, I have a few things in mind.
I would love guides for any OS that integrates AI. One for Windows would be really helpful! Or maybe someone with good knowledge would want to update the Privacy Guides OS section with the info about the AI settings?
The first advice is to not use an LLM at the OS level. Sounds like a stupid advice, however what I mean you should do is disable any type of LLM/AI function in the OS. On Linux it is easy, since it is on default. For Windows, you need to edit GPOs and make “a few” Registry entries.
If it is disabled/not even installed you can not be harmed.
And if you still want to use AI in the OS, I would advise creating a VM with HyprV (for Windows) or QEMU (for Linux) where you install an OS with agentic AI on top of it.
If you can not disable/remove the AI (maybe on apple? – I’m not an apple user so I can not help you here at all) than you are kind of screwed and the best way what you could do is not using it.
