Game changing news. Yay!
first
and I mean seriously first to see it lol.
I have one thing to add
based on the confirmed chip (8 Elite Gen 5) we can narrow down to these brands:
Conditions: it excludes
-
Brands that did not make flagships as recently as the 8 Elite (so thats brands like Nothing, HMD, Even fairphone which was confirmed is not and more)
-
Brands that make custom SoCs (so that basically excludes Google, Samsung and Xiaomi)
Brands narrowing down with the above condition:
- Asus
- Sony
- ZTE
- Motorola
- Honor
- BBK Brands (Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Oneplus, iQOO)
Many Samsung devices are on Qualcomm and not Exynos, but I agree it would be extremely unlikely mainly since they seem to hate custom software. It would be the coolest option though since their hardware is clearly the best in the Android realm.
Motorola seems most likely to me since a lot of their phones still show signs of their Google heritage on the software side, and AFAIK can all be OEM unlocked already.
Hope that doesn’t change in the future though.
that’s the thing, I would think that if Samsung was to make a Graphene phone, they would most likely use Exynos, if I understand their mindset properly that is.
and when it comes to xiaomi it’s more speculative than samsung since im not sure if they are going to continue their whole XRING custom chips let alone globally, we only have the O1 that was released on the 15S Pro and the Pad 7S Pro and they are china exclusive
I just want a Galaxy Fold7 with a clean OS
I guess it’s all speculative. OnePlus could be another likely candidate but I’d be less excited about that, they’re kind of a lame company.
The flagship devices from Samsung and Xiaomi use Snapdragon.
I’d disagree with that. In my opinion, Xiaomi’s hardware is superior. Of course, they wouldn’t collaborate with GrapheneOS.
only on the S25 lineup, S23 - S24 Ultra, and Z series (except Z flip 7 and 7 FE), they’ve mostly since have been doing mixtures of exynos and snapdragon
for xiaomi it’s what I said above basically, their global models (and non-S recent models in china) do still use only snapdragon yes but still would not put them in the likely like how you did.
I’m betting Motorola. Perhaps they are trying to improve the frequency of security patches and thought that GOS can help them get there?
There is also a spin-off company related company called Motorola Solutions that focuses on business and enterprise deployments. I don’t know if they have collaborated after the split, but that could explain why they may want to invest in a secure business/flagship device.
Importantly, Motorola still sells phones in the US market, meaning that they’re supported by all major carriers here. The company is also quite popular globally as well.
Motorola Solutions is actually the successor, while Motorola Mobility (the ones making phones) was spun off. They are very much their own companies nowadays, though, and Motorola Mobility is now owned by Lenovo, who bought it from Google.
That being said, I agree that the OEM could plausibly be Motorola.
Can we though? They specifically said the device has yet to be released and current phones from the manufacturer do not meet their requirements
Thanks for the correction!
Anyways, Motorola was not able to compete with the premium/flagship segment until the release of the Razr foldables. Since the supposed phone will be priced around 799 or so, there is a noticeable gap as none of the slab phones are at that level yet.
Chances are, we may get a new Moto Edge or G series with a flagship Snapdragon chip. Or a GOS version of the Razr foldable since they appear to be a surprising best seller. All that is assuming that my prediction is right however lol
Graphene is under an NDA so they cant be specific of that major OEM
with the confirmation of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 being the SoC and Fairphone not being on the list
lets do some maths
first addressing the condition that phones have to be ones that are in the 8 Elite and above, let’s put it into GSMArena filter, choose by 8 Elite & 8 Elite Gen 5
Now we filter out companies that made custom SoCs to increase our odds (Basically we dont want to speculate if they would use their custom solution or Qualcomm), which is Samsung and Xiaomi
and the result is that we narrowed down to these 10 potential brands
At the end of the day when the Major OEM gives Graphene the okay to reveal it, this is when we will know who exactly it was
As much as I love Sony phones for their SD card slots and headphone jacks, they are expensive and not available in a lot of regions. The smartphone division has shrunk since their peak in the 2000s, so I’m not confident in their ability to get updates out.
true, I did say in a group that “Sony with GrapheneOS would be a pipe dream” so lol.
Their Xperia 5 lineup is more of a compact cheaper phone so idk.
But yeah I have noticed my local marketplace stopped selling them which is a shame but you could get it off say amazon but I digress.
I gotta give them credit though, 4 years of major updates and 6 years of security on the VII Lineup is a major step up from previous years and retaining those 2 too (microsd and headphone jack) and if they can even to just 5 years of both os and security, they just nailed one requirement.
Only one can dream i guess
This list may not be exhaustive, but an official press release from Qualcomm lists these brands:
The latest premium offering in the Snapdragon 8 Elite series will be featured in flagship devices from global OEMs and smartphone brands, including Honor, iQOO, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, POCO, realme, REDMI, RedMagic, ROG, Samsung, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE.
By the looks of that list, I’m leaning towards Samsung, but it could be OnePlus or OPPO, I doubt it’ll be Honor….
this seems to be for the 8 elite gen 5, to make it even, I added 8 elite to the list for this reason
and yeah, redmagic is a subbrand of Nubia which is ZTE’s phone brand. so it ends with ZTE basically
ROG is also subbrand of Asus, which they do also make the Zenfone with the flagship qualcomm chipset (I got no doubt the Zenfone 13 Ultra is coming with the 8 Elite Gen 5)
POCO & REDMI are Xiaomi’s subbrands which we just excluded due to Xiaomi making the XRING O1
similar reason for Samsung
The rest is basically spot on and what I did during the “math” and came to the result which I recommend you refer to the post I responded on how I came to the conclusion and the important message I added in the end
