Does that mean we’ll have to switch from the Pixel to another phone brand?
Ending Pixel exclusivity means it will be supported on more devices and not just Pixels.
This is really great news. A big sticking point for people was that they had to give Google money in order to get Privacy. Which feels counterintuitive for sure.
Is this chip confirmed? All they have said is that it would be the first release that meets their requirements (which might just be alluding to MTE or full SPU enablement for the secure element functions). I don’t think they are confirming the specific chip.
I don’t know much about the specifics of mobile hardware cost and performance so I’ll ask to be sure. Am I correct in assuming this would only be found in a flagship phone?
It’s great news but it’d be a kind of a bummer if the only non-Pixel option was a pricey phone. Even the Pixel 9a is too expensive for some people.
I remember the looks I got from my family when I told them this. They likely just thought I was a Google fanboy in denial.
Great news. Hoping that they target multiple price points for their phones similar to the Pixel. I am nervous that stock security features might result in an additional premium for devices
Yes correct the 8 Elite series are very much flagship tier chip, making it more available for Some flagship killers (examples of flagship killers would be POCO F70 Ultra, OnePlus 13T/s, Ace 5 Pro, iQOO Neo 10 Pro (Plus) series and Realme GT 7 Pro) and flagships phones only.
The lowest I can see costing for a phone with the 8 Elite Gen 5 is around 500-600 take or leave
Holy crap! This is huge news! Hopefully, it’ll be competitively priced and the hardware quality will be good.
It would be awesome if this is true, but I suspect it’ll be more than that.
I’m not opposed to using Samsung’s hardware, as it’s top-notch. Furthermore, I think other than Google and Apple, Samsung has its own custom-designed secure element. I think the freak would be a Samsung SD8G5 device and GOS. I would pay to get one and get out of Google’s lineup of phones!
I’ve been thinking about this since last night.
Now that this is going to happen, if smartphone makers were smart, they’d even encourage or show that they are GrapheneOS compatible. I sincerely hope they start making phones that can be mostly used 1 handed. iPhone 13 mini size is perfect. Even the iPhone 10/11 size was not too bad but anything more is just too large for the digital minimalism a good number of GOS users will be going for (presumably).
I really hope some makers do recognize and realize there indeed is a market (however small but growing) for their taking (if they make all the right moves and if they wanted to) to attract the many folks who are increasingly being forced to the edge due to the growing enshittification with tech and personal consumer electronics especially.
If this doesn’t happen, it’d be sad to realize there is no one smart person in power within these companies (to make this happen) who realizes that privacy is important and that there are legitimate alternatives worth using instead.
Sigh.
Time will tell I guess.
Not trying to be rude, just curious. Why does what OEM they go with matter?
Whatever brand it is, the phone will meet GOS specs and, based off what GOS has said, it will be around the same price range as Pixels.
Because people have personal preferences regarding what they want out of a phone in terms of hardware, and some have tight budgets
I fully understand the need to have an affordable phone, like a lot are saying here. I support that. However, for those who are not as budget constrained, I really hope the hardware is not lacking. I still want a flagship phone hardware with my privacy.
OS Wise sure it doesn’t matter exactly but in brand value and hardware, it can matter actually, and especially as different brands like different values
for example while another possibility of Major OEM poentially being Oneplus alongside Motorola, Basically we’re going full circle like how it was with Oneplus One (when it was Cyanogen formally, sorry if I screwed up the name)
if say it is Asus, Imagine if we as GOS Users advocated to Asus to make the next Graphene compatible device as compact as what was say in the zenfone 10 (basically returning the zenfone non ultra compact phone), crazy thought
if say it is Sony, which is a pipe dream, that literally establishes a perfect phone. A phone that has a headphone jack and microsd card slot and running GOS
If it is say ZTE or Realme or iQOO, The phones would most likely be affordable as both make very little or no profit from selling hardware.
the list goes on.
You seem to only care that it can run the OS and that’s fine but I hope that proves my point.
I emphasize again:
Personally, the main thing I care about in terms of hardware is durability and repairability. For all its flaws, the Pixel lineup is actually better than many in this regard. You can find official parts on iFixit that come directly from Google and there are good guides there too. Whatever GrapheneOS goes with will almost certainly be a downgrade from that perspective, which is sad.
Some people were previously speculating that HMD (which has great repairability scores) could be their pick, but they recently dropped out of the US market so I doubt it.
And this is where Frame.Work can really shine if they choose to enter the smartphone world with their philosophy on tech. But don’t think they’ll do this any time soon. But I do believe they possess the ability to.
didnt the CEO of framework say it is a very risky business and they don’t wanna pursue it yet or likely won’t? Im just saying based on that statement it is way out of the realm (iirc he was formally asked and answered during the launch event of the framework desktop)
Yes. You’re right. That’s why I said don’t think they will but they can if they wanted to. Only meant that I wish they would.
