GrapheneOS/Pixel 8a battery draining

Recently, a post appeared on the GrapheneOS forum where some users claimed that disabling the exploit protection on Graphene could increase battery life.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the exact words, the comment that stated it has been deleted.

What do you think? My Pixel 8a doesn’t make it through the day.

Mine consume around 30-50% from 0700 to 2200hrs, depending on usage.

You might want to check actual usage in setting?

I can regularly get 12+ hours of screen on time spread over 3-5 days.

Please don’t do this.

While using the battery, which applications use the most battery?

Because I had battery drain problems on my Pixel, but then I discovered that it was mainly Brave’s fault (I replaced it with Vanadium) and also Mullvad VPN’s (which I replaced with Proton VPN).

Without these two applications, my smartphone lasts almost twice as long.

I’m not saying it’s the same for everyone, which is why I said to check if there are applications that consume more battery than others.

I just checked and from the statistics it seems that the one using more battery in standby is Molly

I downloaded ntfy and set up the adminforge server as advised by a user on the graphene forum

I’ll keep you updated

Strongly discouraged. Per the post linked:

GrapheneOS
yeehawk It’s highly unlikely that significant power was saved by disabling exploit protection and this is not a good idea. You’re greatly reducing the security of your apps for a placebo. The difference was due to your usage of the apps, etc. rather than this. This is not about apps having bad intentions but rather apps getting exploited.

GrapheneOS
avaluedcustomer avaluedcustomer Don’t do this, it’s not accurate. You will reduce your security.

GrapheneOS
Thread locked due to people being recommended to turn off important security features based on highly non-scientific testing showing what are almost certainly highly inaccurate results.

Its the reason why we use and recommend GrapheneOS. Why remove the reason to use GrapheneOS?

If there had really been an improvement in the battery life, at least for the apps I use most, I would have thought of it, I mean how often does it happen that an app behaves in a malicious way? (Getting exploited, virus, etc)

At least for apps with viruses, downloading them is unlikely if you’re very careful about what you download, at least on GrapheneOS

Or am I wrong?

What does the report tell you at the end of the day when you go to:

Settings > Battery > Battery Usage

That will tell you which app is draining your battery:

These are tonight’s statistics

(Not exactly for tonight, but for the last hour, however I checked and it’s very similar to the one for the whole night),

the thing I notice compared to my old Pixel 6 Pro is that in standby mode, apps consume a significant amount of battery.

Why is your mobile signal eating up so much of your battery? Are you tethering and torrenting from your laptop?

The phone is not connected to anything, the preferred network is LTE, and the only activities are those of the graphics :frowning:

I think something is up with your phone mate. Perhaps try factory resets on everything just to entirely rule out software or firmware setting?

I literally have all the latest updates to the minutes after the notification pops up and I havent seen this and we have the same phone and OS.

Prob. your ntfy app pings too frequently, which keeps the modem busy, which drains your battery.

If I have to find out the cause, I would

  1. Test if switching to WIFI would dramatically improve battery life
  2. Test if disabling NTFY app would dramatically lower Modem / Wifi battery usage

I would really like to avoid this, until graphene replaces the backup app, I wouldn’t really like to reset everything

The fact is that without it, I really don’t know how to receive notifications from Signal (Molly) in the stock way, without third-party apps, and with Molly sending notifications, it consumes even more.

I don’t use unified push / nfty so I don’t know exactly how it works.

After looking at FAQs - ntfy It seems to be configuration issues, you might want to double check that.

Regarding baseband power draw, ~1.5% draw per hour seems modest so I would say double check ntfy first.

Regarding power draw benefits of disabling exploit protection, I think it is not universal as the apps that I used most heavily (i.e. FeedMe and Ironfox) doesn’t consume much battery, even with the feature turned on.

Those screenshots can only be taken with a grain of salt since that was after 13 minutes. That menu shows much more of rolling averages and is only accurate across longer time periods.

Another thing to check is how many cycles your battery has gone through via Settings > About phone > Battery information.

For example, my excellent battery above is on a device with only 219 cycles through it since December 2022. Which is an average of 1 charge every 3.6 days.
Some of my other Pixels are in the 800+ range and indeed die quicker.

The battery has 156 cycles, (I bought the phone in November, is that too many?)

Anyway, I’ll post tonight’s statistics with ntfy optimized as @TinFoilHat advised

Another app that seems to be consuming maybe is WhatsApp, but I think it’s normal since Google Play Services is not installed.

I’d say that’s a lot. I have 184 and I’ve had my device since June.
