Thank you for pointing this out.
Do you know when they will release it?
Hell no! Can you imagine having the situation we have now with android on your desktop as well? Itâs bad enough having the big G holding the gun to our heads as it is. Also android was designed with mobiles and spyware in mind, just take a look at the apps list if you donât believe me. There is very little in the way of commercial, engineering or scientific software of the kind most people need a desktop for in the way of solving the kind of tasks that ultimately pay the bills.
SureâŚ. if you only need a desktop for surfing, chatting or playing games on then go ahead knock yourself out, but be prepared for the stress of knowing that screwgle can pull the plug on you any time they please.
Bit hard to read this, but are you talking about DIY-ness of desktop computers vs smartphone hardware?
Itâs the inherent âDIY-nessâ of the Linux desktop that makes it what it is. As for mobile hardware youâre just as likely to find a Snapdragon on the space station as you are on the street. Only major difference is the one on the street was designed with everything from the kernel up that you are likely to need when youâre away from your desktop. Hence the reason as to why linux phones are way behind android in terms of tractability.
The same applies to android when you reverse the situation in that linux has already established itself as not only the king of desktop, but also a whole myriad of other specialist devices. Everything from ATMâs to missile control systems. Even more importantly no one large corporate holds the keys to that kingdom giving them the power with which to coerce and blackmail you into using their products and services.
I donât give a damn as to whether screwgle release desktop android, I already know where my bread is best buttered. Android in its original form was innovative linux at its best but it has been hijacked by the bad guys. Get used to it.
They will release QPR2 in early December. So if Google doesnât release QPR1 by then, it would be pretty much dead. So I would except it before, if Google is still commited to AOSP.
With the release of QPR1 and pending GOS support, it might be worthwhile to revisit Desktop mode and see how the new features are implemented.
Also, good news for Android and ARM-based Linux distributions as apparently Valve got SteamOS working on the Snapdragon gen 3 via an emulator called Fex. This is all speculation of course, but we may see increased support for x86 native apps on AndroidâŚspecifically on the supposed new OEM device that GOS plans to support. That may take years of development though, so I donât expect a future Snapdragon-based GOS phone to reach feature parity anytime soon.
Correction
Valveâs Steam Frame actually uses An 8 Gen 3 NOT an 8 Elite and is a vr headset making it a kind of unique SteamOS.
And it is confirmed valve uses FEX for the emulation layer for x86 windows code/native apps to Linux ARM and Valve has contributed significantly to the FEX Project.
Overall if it means for the possibility to Play games and run desktop software (like Zen Browser to put one example since this one doesnât even have a mobile browser) like how Proton is for x86 PCs, Iâm in, that assumes though that Googleâs Tensor chips performance matched with the big players (Mediatek Dimensity 9000 series, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 series) but they do not unfortunately.
But what valve is doing has potential for average use but also gaming phones/flagships to finally get the shine they needed.
On the subject of QPR1 Source Code: Finally!
Oh thanks for the correction. I sometimes make weird typos here so appreciate the heads up!
Not sure how FEX will work on current GOS Pixel models. Is it possible to install it and test it out? Or would the OEM need to enable it on the device itself and configure it? We may need to wait until FEX becomes a standard and every single Android OEM decides to compete with the desktop/laptop market lol.
I am testing it right now. Definitely beta feeling.
-If you take a screenshot with the keyboard key, but the screenshot pop up on the phone, so any modification like cropping or drawring will need to be done on the phone.
-When you select an input field. a virtual keyboard will appear even if you have a keyboard connected. It goes away when you start typing
-No way to lower the screen brigthness. Itâs way too bright for my taste, especially when viewing documents with a white background.
I also canât seem to be able to access my notifications, and there is no way to see all my open apps except in the taskbar (no overview).
Still a huge improvement compared to before, but not ready to recommend it. Still in developper options for a reason.
Thatâs not a bug or glitch, thatâs intentional. Even with Samsung DeX or not and iOS/iPadOS does this
How are you testing it? GOS QPR1 is not out yet.
edit:
nevermind, I just saw GOS announcement
This doesnât make sense if there is a keyboard connected. It could popup on the phone if you use the two silmutaneously, but not on the external screen.
if it pops up on the external screen that is considered a bug, if its on the internal screen it isnât yes. And it makes sense as I have personally even if not often needed the virtual keyboard over the physical.
It does pop up on the external screen, meaning on the big screen, not on the phone screen.
Gotcha, thanks for clarifying.
Yes I can very much consider this a bug that the keyboard appears on the external screen
IIRC there is a toggles somewhere to change the behaviour.
This doesnât appear on Pixel. Maybe for Samsung phones?
Just noticed GOS Team released A16 QPR1 builds, will look into the keyboard toggle when the build reaches stable channel.
Graphene just updated on my phone and the UI changed completely. Checking out if this is has the GOS Desktop mode now.
