Has anyone tried Github Store?
Why can’t devs make it easy for newcomers and learners to privacy and open source tech to download the right app file for their OS. They could have easily linked with specificity for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android instead of relying on users to know which file to download for themselves.
This is what I call lacking bedside manners in the open source world; not accounting for the newbies for a new tool.
Anyways, this looks interesting. Almost like a Homebrew GUI alternative.
Nope. I think it looks cool, but doesn’t provide enough value to me personally over just using Obtanium especially given that a lot of open source projects that I use push their binaries to Gitlab, Codeberg, Fdroid, etc…
Well, it’s for other kinds of use cases too I would imagine.
I was thinking it could be a beginner/non-tech guy friendly alternative to Obtanium.
Yes, it also works on desktop, but I’m on Arch and the built-in package manager is much more flexible and provides a much better experience. Ex. On Linux Wayland, if you want your app icons to show up well everywhere there’s a bit of an installation step to copy them over. I don’t think a tool like this github store app can implement this.
Developers are not UX designers, those are vast and different fields.
Also, it’s not that trivial to think about all the use cases and people potentially using your tools.
I think that the README demonstrates quite well how to use it.
You don’t ask how to cook pasta to your local sushi chef, you look for it by yourself. Same here, why would a project be an exhaustive list that explains what/where/how while it’s not what the project is about?
Also, there are quite a lot of variants (Apple Intel, Apple’s M series, 32 bits Windows, NixOS, Fedora’s approach etc…), nobody has the bandwidth to write the code + evangelize + maintain docs at the same time while not being paid for it.
There are resources online with sustainable businesses or guides on how to reach that, yet it would be very unfeasible to expect this from every developer solving a small niche problem.
There is a learning curve to any kind of industry, tool or service.
If it’s free and niche, it won’t hold your hand with a dedicated personal video and a hotline. At the same time, “how to install Discord on Ubuntu” is not that hard of a query to type.
Some things might be harder to learn but you can always ask, plenty of people are patient enough to explain. ![]()
And indeed, this project solves a VERY niche UX haha. Not sure it would be that useful for the masses but it’s nice trying at least. ![]()
Thanks for the comment.
But I am not asking for something unreasonable that devs can’t do. It’s literally linking the OS to the OS specific image. That’s it. They don’t need to be anyone else other than a little mindful, is all.
Are you taking offense to my comment? Because that’s how it reads like. Following your logic, I can also say that nobody has the bandwidth to monetize their software on several different platforms with several different payment options while only having the exact amount of time to develop your tool. Do you then suddenly run out of time?
This is about priorities, nothing more as I see it.

Nothing in my first comment is an unreasonable thought or even an ask. If the devs can do all this, a little more to make it more accessible to people wanting to use your tool is not a big ask by any measure (for all the beginners).

Heh, reminds me of..
Iam new to GitHub and I have lots to say
I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THE FUCKING CODE! i just want to download this stupid fucking application and use it GitHub - sherlock-project/sherlock: Hunt down social media accounts by username across social networks
WHY IS THERE CODE??? MAKE A FUCKING .EXE FILE AND GIVE IT TO ME. these dumbfucks think that everyone is a developer and understands code. well i am not and i don’t understand it. I only know to download and install applications. SO WHY THE FUCK IS THERE CODE? make an EXE file and give it to me. STUPID FUCKING SMELLY NERDS

Seems very similar to the ĂĽber popular Obtainium, which is something quite a few vocal users of the Android app I co-develop use.
My comment was meant to be general, not specific to this one. ![]()
Nah, why would I? I am not doing FOSS anymore and it’s also not my project. ![]()
I am mostly reminding to people that volunteer developers with bills to pay doesn’t round the corners as would a nice small business with steady income.
This is also why everybody is welcome to contribute. ![]()
If you’re making money out of something, then you will probably fine tune your thing very nicely.
Kinda what @ignoramous linked below with Reddit yes. ![]()
