Call your rep. If it’s a Democrat, ask if they really want to give the Trump administration the power to surveil every american? If it’s a Republican, ask them if they believe in free speech. Say surveillance stiffle free speech.
Politically, both parties have differing views on what’s free speech. Not sure they’d agree the argument we’d make.
Please try. I am not a US citizen but if you are do.
You can see how your representative voted on the most recent FISA reauth that passed here and you can see how your senators voted here.
I had an LLM make a script to send to friends/family who are in districts where their rep voted in favor of it last time. This one has an ICE twist on it.
[Hey, I have a favor to ask. There’s a surveillance law called FISA Section 702 that expires on April 20. It lets the government collect foreigners’ communications but also sweeps up tons of Americans’ calls and emails, and then the FBI searches through them without a warrant. They’ve used it to spy on protesters, journalists, even a sitting member of Congress.
Here’s the part I thought you’d care about: the 2024 reauthorization added a provision letting intelligence agencies use 702 data to screen anyone traveling to the US, and ICE has been using the broader surveillance infrastructure — including data purchased from brokers without warrants — to track immigrants, people who film federal agents, and even US citizens at protests. Reform advocates are trying to close those loopholes now, but a clean extension would keep all of it in place and hand these powers to the Trump administration for another 18 months.
Your rep (Name) voted to renew it last time without reforms, and (he/she) might do it again. Would you call (his/her) office? (phone number) — just say you’re a (county) constituent and you want (him/her) to oppose a clean extension of Section 702 without a warrant requirement and without closing the data broker loophole. It’s a 2-minute call and constituent’s calls from their district matter.]
If they ask what to say you can give them this script. (Don’t forget to remove quotes and fill it in.
“Hi, my name is [name] and I’m a constituent in (town). I’m calling to ask Representative (name) to oppose a clean extension of FISA Section 702. I’d like him to support a warrant requirement for searching Americans’ communications and to close the data broker loophole that lets agencies like ICE buy our personal data without a court order. Thank you.”
Definitely edit it to make it personal and not sound AI, but it is a starting point.
The House voted to prolonge FISA by … two weeks !
This can give time to do a campaign against it
