I finally moved from Gmail to Posteo, a few days after I first came across it. It turned out to fit what I need really well.
Gmail was the last Google service I still relied on, apart from YouTube, and I had wanted to get rid of it for a long time. What held me back for years was the thought of changing the email on every single account. I kept telling myself I’d do it later.
What saved me in the end was DuckDuckGo Email Protection, with the help of my extension Qwacky. Over time I moved most of my accounts to duck .com addresses, so when I was finally ready, all I had to do was change the forwarding address to the new inbox. That cut out most of the work.
So far I’m happy with it. It’s cheap, it didn’t ask for any personal info, and the migration from Gmail went smoothly. I know it has its downsides, like the DMARC policy that has come up here before. I’ve also read that the crypto mail storage is decrypted on their servers, which makes sense since it works with any IMAP client, and Posteo says itself that it doesn’t protect against lawful interception. For my use, though, it’s been a good trade-off.
What do you think of Posteo? Anyone here been using it long term?
