Facebook Now Supports Passkeys for Passwordless Login on iPhone and iPad

Meta today announced that passkey support has been added to Facebook, making it easier to sign in securely without a password. Passkeys are compatible with all Apple devices, so iPhones and iPads can use passkeys for Facebook logins instead of passwords.
Passkeys will be available on iOS devices “soon,” with Meta rolling out support to Messenger in the coming months. The same passkey that’s set up for Facebook will also work for Messenger when Messenger passkey support launches. Meta says that passkeys are only available on mobile devices for the time being, so logging in on a computer will still require a username and password.

Frustrating that it’s so limited, for passkeys to be useful you need to be able to make a passkey from the beginning without a password on your account.

Passkeys are a great step forward if your priority is convenience and phishing resistance within a major ecosystem. But for those of us who value privacy, local control, and avoiding vendor lock-in, traditional passwords — especially when managed via a deterministic, offline-first manager — still offer more autonomy.

Not everyone is comfortable tying access to their most important accounts to Apple, Google, or cloud syncing. With passwords, you retain full control: you can store, export, revoke, or migrate them freely — even without an internet connection.

Just something to consider if you’re prioritizing sovereignty over convenience.

KeePasXC and KeePassium support passkeys. KeePassDX is also working on it. They don’t need the cloud or internet to work.
It will also be possible to export them between different providers soon.
