Does this have any significance beyond the app just having a tag that says NSFW?

We will not allow any new NSFW apps (NSFW = apps that would require age verification in most countries).
- We will add a new antifeature named NSFW and apply this to the existing apps.
- We will fix fdroidclient#564 (closed) and hide NSFW by default.
- We will keep the remaining NSFW apps in F-Droid so that users can keep receiving updates until we have a proper migration path.
Oh so this is effectively a ban on any new apps that contain graphic religious text. That is kind of a big deal

So F-Droid is now starting to censor stuff that they disagree with.
And they can’t say its for compliance, cause they obviously tag stuff with NSFW that the law (in 99% of the world) wouldn’t see as NSFW.
This is bad news.
But likely F-Droid structure alows for custom repos that doesn’t censore.

In a vacuum, I could kind of see a “well technically…” kind of argument for marking these as NSFW, but it is censorship if they plan to block NSFW content in the future and at best it’s just a weird hill for them to die on, IMO.

Yup, this is the take. My 2 cents is that the NSFW or any content rating is low key censorship if it’s planned to be used as anything other than a polite suggestion. Once it’s used in any legal sense it’s just the schema of how you’ll censor information.
Subjective opinion and we shouldn’t use one form of censorship to justify another.

Requiring age-verification for religious books of any kind would be a particularly grave threat, considering that penalties for getting caught reading religious texts can lead to hard prison time, or even death in a great deal of countries.
Religious apps do not require age verification in most countries. They’re either allowed or not based on if the country has freedom of religion. The devs made an exception to their own rule to censor content they personally disagree with.
No. They’re books that vaguely describe and don’t actually show what happened. This is different and you know it.
The human brain processes images far differently than words that vaguely describe it. Watching gore and violence can literally cause PTSD even in adults. For children its much worse and realistic violence can easily get them into shock and nightmares, whereas reading about wars and conflicts in stories - which is common for fairy tales and religious texts alike - isn’t traumatic and the reader itself is who comes up with the imagery.
Telling a bunch of 4th graders during story time that “King Author sliced his villans arm off!” can cause a limited “OMG!” in the classroom, but mostly boredom and maybe some giggles, and thats the end of it. If you play pretend sword fighting with kids they can easily pretend “you cut my leg off!” and start hopping on one leg, etc. This doesnt bother them.
But for children watching realistic gore, violence, or god forbid something like an ISIS beheading video can cause lasting trauma (and again, even for adults). What is told orally or in books has always had a lower “age rating” than what is shown on screen. This is something easily understandable to anyone who has raised children or works in childcare. I don’t think it needs to be explained that a kid reading Little Red Riding Hood’s reference to eating humans isn’t remotely the same as a kid watching a gory zombie movie or liveleak video.

Same could be said for sexual content in video form. Religious texts don’t have graphic, detailed depictions of sex, just general descriptions of what happened. In the case of young children they just won’t understand or care, and just read over it, and in the case of teens it can get a good giggle out of them (“OMG, they said BREASTS!”) and thats the end of it.
But porn is designed to arouse and be addicting. For young children watching porn can be like seeing gore, and for hormone-pumped teens it can be incredibly addicting and lead to behavioral issues.
This is a silly discussion in the first place. We already understand that the developers here are making bad-faith argument with the actual intention to censor religion. So let’s stop pretending and call things what they are.
