If I understand correctly, Ente Locker will allow you to store files, documents, notes, etc. exclusively, a bit like a “drive” but not really, since you won’t be able to store photos and videos on it?
If this was not a drive like Proton Drive, I was gonna say this looks like the soft launch of a password manager.
We’ll increase the seats next week, currently incorporating feedback shared by the first set of customers.
File system integration is out of scope for Locker, but we will provide a CLI that you can configure to continuously export your data.
You’ll be able to store all kinds of files in Locker, including photos & videos.
Why aren’t you folks building a drive app with file-system integration? Is that not something you need for yourselves? ![]()
I think Ente Locker is a lot like Papra or Paperless-ngx . If I understand correctly (maybe @vishnukvmd could correct me), features like Full-Text Search are also planned or at least are on the wishlist. And I’ve been enjoying using Papra. So, this could turn out really cool
Sorry, I don’t quite understand. If I can store documents, files, notes, photos and videos on Ente Locker, then is it a drive? I don’t understand when you say it isn’t one. I don’t see the difference.
If you can store any file that does constitute a drive
@vishnukvmd might wanna word things better
Because you said you can store a few things like documents but you’re not limited to type, that’s in a way basically an Ente drive
I think they mean for it to be small secure space that is meant to be an actual digital “locker” whose primary purpose is to pass on data (like estate planning?) and not for day to day use as a drive.
@vishnukvmd I am going to withhold my judgement until I can actually use your app, but I’m pretty confused about this if true, to be honest.
What you’re describing Ente Locker as now is the exact functionality I and others are already using a password manager for:
So… with Ente Locker what I am getting is an app that holds all the same information, but since it has less functionality than my password manager I will still need one of those too, which means I have to manually keep synced copies of everything both there and in Ente Locker?
It feels like you’re already very close to just having a password manager, which will have much broader appeal. Then, if you could build in more advanced next-of-kin or emergency access functionality like only sharing my documents/credentials if 2 of 3 (configurable) parties get together for example, you would have a pretty unique selling point. Currently with 1Password I’d have to share all my documents with my family while I’m still alive, or I’d have to leave my emergency recovery kit in my will or a safe deposit box which represents a security risk.
Better emergency sharing functionality then does seem like a compelling reason to switch to Ente, but without password manager functionality and OS/browser integrations I don’t really see that happening.
I guess I could leave password manager recovery instructions in Ente Locker, but this whole app for one document seems wasteful.
I would also encourage you to seriously at least consider this broadening of scope, because there should be more good & FOSS password managers. Bitwarden and Proton Pass are both alright but there are a lot of (valid) reasons some people don’t trust/like the companies behind them.
Plus I trust Ente to make a nicer app experience more than those two lol
@vishnukvmd I’m curious what your retention policy/guarantee is going to be for data in the Locker in the case of an emergency? It is not unlikely to involve a lot of grief, which can take a long time for someone to work through. It might therefore be many months (or even longer) before the recipient of the account handover has the energy to deal with it. Seeing as this is intended for important files, knowing it’ll still be there is crucial if one is to rely on it.
Reading your ToS, you have different data retention policies depending on how a subscription is cancelled. Will Locker fall under one of those (paragraphs b.i and b.iii) or a different one? Paragraph c) for example kinda sounds like it is intended for Locker?
7. TERMINATION (bold emphasis mine)
a) For Visitors: We reserve the right to cease providing Visitors with access to all or part of our Services at any time for any reason, including, but not limited to, if we reasonably believe: (i) they have violated this Agreement or our Privacy Policy, (ii) they create risk or possible legal exposure for Ente; or (iii) the provision of our Services to them is no longer commercially viable.
b) For Subscribers:
(i) Termination by us: We reserve the right to suspend or terminate a Subscriber’s Account and their license to use our Services for any reason, including, but not limited to, if we reasonably believe: (a) they have violated this Agreement or our Privacy Policy, (b) they create risk or possible legal exposure for Ente; (c) the provision of our Services to them is no longer commercially viable; (d) they are using a free account, without an active paid subscription, that has been inactive for a consecutive period of 12 months. In case of inactivity, notices will be sent 30, 15, and 7 days in advance to the email address associated with the free account. To keep a free account active, a subscriber must log in or use one of our services (e.g., by viewing a photo or code) at least once every 12 months. If you face circumstances preventing activity, contact Customer Support to avoid account deletion.
(ii) Cancellation and Termination by Subscribers: Subscribers can cancel their Subscription (“Cancellation”) at any time by (i) cancelling directly through the relevant app store account; or (iii) selecting the option to cancel Subscription on the Subscriber’s Account page. Subscribers can terminate their Account and thereby our Services by (i) writing an email to account-deletion@ente.io (“Termination”). Any payments processed after an effective Cancellation or Termination will be promptly refunded by us.
(iii) Effect of Termination: Subscribers should download all Data prior to Termination of Services. Upon Termination, we will schedule their uploaded Files and Data for deletion within the next thirty (30) days. In case of shared Files and Data, we may retain them to ensure access to Authorized Persons. We may also maintain Subscriber’s email address, IP address and user agent information in a hashed form to prevent an abuse of Free Plans. If we suspend or terminate our Services to a Subscriber because they or their Authorized Persons have breached these Terms, we may, delete a Subscriber’s Data immediately, deny them access to their Data, or keep it for evidential purposes during the suspension.
c) For All Users: All sections, which by their nature and context are intended to survive the termination of this Agreement, will survive
(Btw, you’re also missing a full stop at the end, after will survive.)
Just download it trough Aurora Store ![]()
This describes a needed use case for me. Will there be a search function that will include the text within a PDF? Some like: openpaper.work
Has nothing to do with where you download it from. You need to login and that is where the limit kicks in.
I don’t use Playstore and Aurora. Is there another official Place where i can download it? Github or fdroid ? I’m using ente photos paid so as i understand i can use locker too.
I downloaded it trough Aurora Store, no problem but I can’t log in. Console says they have locked registration for now.
If they are going to hypothetically create a password manager in the future,
I hope they prioritize these features in their development roadmap.
- Archive
- Multiple Vaults for One Account
- Username Generator
- Password Generator (where users can exclude the special characters individually. As, some sites don’t accept all the special characters.)
- Travel Mode
- A full offline mode similar to KeePass, with no cloud storage as an advanced option during setup and within the settings to switch between cloud and offline mode after setup.
Wait is there a CLI like this for Ente Photos too ? Because I’m forced to manually back up all my photos in regular basis and the support never told me about some CLI or setting to automate this
Okay can’t login anyway. Beta stopped message popps up. Can’t try
Anyway…don’t know maybe stay with proton
This really isn’t a Drive replacment. At least for now, there is a 1000 document hard limit.
There is a bare-bone note feature.
Nice UI and presets though. This seems more like a digital vault for important stuff. And that’s fine.
BTW, sign-up have been increased, so you can try again.
