If I understand correctly, it’s a drive similar to a proton drive?

Yes, it’s been planned for a while

Overall I am pretty much a fan of Ente, but I don’t know where they are going with this… I understand that it is a place for super important docs, logins, informations, notes, … but I don’t need this. Pretty much all of us PG forum members already use a password manager. I already store my ID there and have a note with some codes, XMR seed and recovery codes. I also use Notesnook so what’s better with Locker? Idk… except that it would be kind of an ecosystem and we need less accounts

I found it on their website… Ente Locker - Safe space for your most important documents

It’s weird marketing to be honest, but the idea is that it is basically a full-fledged drive. I was also under the impression that it can only store documents and credentials just from first glance.

It is not a password manager, but they are advertising it as such by claiming that you can share credentials and whatnot. They are trying to separate this product from Ente Photos which is meant for photos and videos. To be honest, they are better off emphasizing the storage aspect of it given that Proton Drive is an imperfect implementation of what Ente has accomplished with their photo gallery app.

Where did you see that info? It does seem more like 1Password (or… Nord Locker lol) than Proton Drive to me.

The screenshots on the Play Store reminds mw of the Google “Files” app (not in a good way), but I’ll probably try it out.

I’m confused about the messaging around credentials however. Is there a password manager kinda-thing included, or is ir just storing plain text stuff?

No I tried it and it is much more similar to a Drive than a password manager (as advertised I believe!)

Vishnu (the CEO of Ente) talks a bit about the purpose of Ente Locker on a recent podcast. It’s supposed to be specifically for your more important documents to safekeep (think birth certificates, contracts, etc.) and isn’t a general purpose drive product. It doesn’t sound like a password manager either (in the sense that it would ever autofill forms).

It does sound pretty niche to me but I look forward to checking it out.

Proton can also safekeep important documents. What is the difference? I still did not listened to the podcast

I guess Ente is creating their own ecosystem like Proton. To answer your question, I don’t think there’s any difference. It’s just a nice QoL addition to the Ente ecosystem.

Yeah, I have no idea; hence why I said it sounds niche.

I suppose up until this point, their modus operandi is to do data storage and sharing in a way that’s optimised for specific domains. A drive product would cover their Photo and Locker products but often in less than optimal ways. Photos, at least, fulfills most of what I’ve been looking for that no drive product has ever met.

I’m sure @vishnukvmd himself will jump in at some point.

Unfortunately already out of beta seats

I think the framing of Ente Locker as more of a safe than a workspace could be good for people who would otherwise bring expectations of Google Drive.

Even now I am disappointed that Proton Drive can’t do more compared to Google Drive. With Ente Locker, I can imagine it being for people who know they want to stash away a few important things but don’t want a whole bunch of storage that they’re supposedly trying to work out of.

With everything being encrypted, treating your encrypted cloud storage as something you only need to go into every so often sounds more approachable than pretending it will be a comfortable experience to work out of.

For me, the positioning connects. I think it will for Ente Photos users too who are looking for a very specific experience.

I don’t understand. Ente Locker is a tool for storing documents, notes, etc., but not photos/videos, is that right? A Proton Drive without the Photos part, if I understand correctly?

I’m happy paying for Ente Photos, and using Ente Auth, I’m just not sure if this is valuable to me at all.

They already have Ente Photos for that. Although we will seez they might allow you to upload photos documents.

Hey, just thought I’ll clear up a few things about Locker.

Firstly, Locker is not a “drive”. We do not plan to offer a file system integration.

Secondly, Locker is something we built for ourselves (much like Photos and Auth), that we are making available to a wider audience. Some of us have less than 100 documents that we consider important enough to outlive us. So Locker is being designed as a simple app that is accessible to our parents, partners and kids; to stash and share important information.

niche

Yes! This does sound niche right now, and we’re okay with that. Photos and Auth also sounded niche when we started.

Also, there’s no separate pricing plan for Locker. It’ll be bundled for free with your Photos subscription. We think it’ll be useful for some.

Would you mind increasing the number of beta seats? I would like to try it out, but can’t due to this limitation.

Are you planing to implement two-way sync, especially on Android?
