I’m mainly talking about local biometrics like in your phone, where the data is stored securely in the secure element and not accessible even to the OS or the rest of the phone let alone anyone else. Biometrics where they have to collect and store data on a server somewhere are bad.
There’s no reason to not use biometrics unless you’re going somewhere where you can get your phone seized. In countries like US you could then be forced to unlock via biometrics.
Grabbing someone’s phone after seeing the pin is becoming a common method used by thieves. Therefore, I use fingerprint to unlock.
Personally I do not use biometrics. Call me old-school but I prefer to put in a password or use a passkey where available.
Solution: unlock it less often. Works quite well as a detox. ![]()
If you have a scrambled long PIN + privacy screen, not sure the thief will have any clue about what you just typed.
I do use GOS with a privacy screen (horizontal + vertical to avoid preying eyes) + a long alphanumeric combo passcode. Wish I could have had passcode + biometric but the screen messed up the recognition on my Pixel 9a (only optical fingerprint reader on there…). ![]()
But am fine with this drawback because I do love the idea of people not seeing what I am seeing once my phone is unlocked.
Did you enable “Screen protector mode”?
Yes, that helps with the screen being more responsive but doesn’t allow for the optical sensor to fetch the finger still.
A disclaimer was written on the website of the privacy screen and it kinda makes sense from a tech POV given how thick the privacy screen is.
A pixel 9 or higher SKU would probably been working just well but eh, not a big deal for me. ![]()
Yes, although I’ve never touched face unlock.
Funny enough, one of my banks puts a few limits on how much money you can send without giving them your biometric data. Voice and facial, I believe. Had to deal with this yesterday.
They also put some features behind biometrics, like virtual cars
Luckily, my other banks are not so draconian, but well, who knows when that will change.
Yes, I basically use the fingerprint sensor to unlock my smartphone, except in winter, it would hardly be possible to use the fingerprint sensor with thick gloves, but entering a PIN, on the other hand, works great.
