my Mullvad subscription expires in 3 weeks and I’ve been struggling to come up with a good reason to keep using it not because I dont like the product or dont understand its value from a protection point of view but I have found that I really need NextDNS alongside device parental controls is really helpful to combat addictive tendencies.
I am aware of the IPv6 method and have tried it in the past. I can’t remember why I stopped pretty sure it had to do with fingerprintability. But fingerprinting is not a major part of my threat model anymore. However it is still massively trivial to enable and disable DNS setting within Mullvad I am not proud to say that it’s become a habit. Am I approaching this with the wrong mindset let me know. I am on macOS and iOS
My approach to this is a little extreme. I do it with full force no if and or buts and simply stop cold. I had social media. I rage quit and deleted all accounts at once after saving contact info of people with whom I wanted to stay connected. No more accounts, no more opening the website or the app.
It’s the only way I have found myself to stay true to quitting a habit. Rid yourself of even the option to make it available like you once had it. Your immediate future will be frustrating but we know its good for us long term and that’s what’s more important.
Sorry, I know this doesn’t answer your question but thought I’d share what I consider odd wisdom that works.

I concur with sentiment but unfortunately as I much try to avoid it and social media is a requirement for my goals and I already only limit myself to TikTok and only use the creator version of app to avoid all the brain rot nonsense. Social media isnt the main concern to be honest its more trying to restrict access to adult content and compulsive YouTube watching
Well, any external tools used to ensure of this is simply and always going to be a band aid at best. True change will have to come from new habits, having and following through with the power of self restriction to not do what you always do (and I know you want to use tools to ensure of this because you need help but as I see it and have experienced it, it’s never sustainable), and sticking strong to your new values to live your life better having identified and acted upon damaging addictiveness.
Sorry again. All I have is words for you. Perhaps its not enough to call it a solution but in the end, this will more likely than not be the only way to achieve your goals and have it stick long term.

do not underestimate the power of words. I think I just realized that privacy and security have often been a coping mechanism so sometimes that mindset sort of leaks into other aspects of my life for me so acknowledging like hey there is no magic tool that can fix this problem forces me to reevaluate myself which I will always be appreciative of

Maybe try a dedicated vpn router? For example gl-inet opal, compact design, powers up from usb c, user friendly graphic interface.
And how exactly do you reckon this resolves the issue that OP here has?
