This is great for those who want to switch but have already paid for a different password manager.
wonder why they go on such aggressive market establishment techinques, doubt they actually need it to gain more people over time.
I think this is quite destructive, instead of targeting hig techs, they decided to steal from smaller companies.
If they change their marketing to “ditch your google / apple/ MS password manager and we offer free proton pass”, that would be nice.
I mean look at it this way, the only fully paid suggestion PG recommends are 1Password and to a lesser extent, proton pass and bitwarden. So really its an improvement in security for the users who switch most of the time. Cellular companies run the same deals all the time. If they get people switching from lastpass to proton for example, that’s massive.
I won’t use Proton Pass as a backup because it is missing so many important things from 1Password when doing import and not supporting many things, like file attachments, multiple usernames, IDs, passports, SSH keys, licenses, and can’t even remember last used sort option.
It is good marketing strategy but I prefer Bitwarden as my backup for now. If devs check other password managers and see what they didn’t implement, and then fix it, then I can do the switch.
I would consider 1password, bitwarden, proton, and the like as kindda allies as they are all trying to provide better products than those big techs.
I dont know how they see each other though.
I just think this marketing from proton is lame for not pointing their spear to big tech, but to allies Instead.
You missed my point, they aren’t targeting bitwarden or even 1Password with this. They’re targeting people using services like lastpass. It simultaneously gets them more business while moving people away from bad companies that aren’t as serious about privacy.
Look at the comparison, they give themselves points for having “Encrypted email etc, Advanced account protection and swiss privacy”. It’s kinda pathetic imo.
Proton is taking a minor hit on losses to get more market share in their garden. If you are using split services, customers may not be as likely to switch over. But the more proton you use, then might as well use their other features, and that likely increases a chance to get sold on their premium features.
Overall, I consider this a usual marketing strategy. Good for customers who were thinking to switch over. However we should always think twice before putting all of our resources in a single entity, and need to think if that affects you.
If that (lastpass and the like) is what proton is after, then I think they did a really bad job on this one.
Because they target a specific group of people, but the campaign seem totally different.
If they wanna target the users “stucked” with bad paid solutions because they paid, then they probably should not compare themselves with other decent platforms, but compare with the “bad” ones.
