Call me cynical but I’m inclined not to trust it. Probably won’t ever be. The fact that its Discord itself is a turn off so there’s bias here but I still question the quality of the E2EE and its implementation.
The DAVE protocol itself is open, and its integration is open source, allowing independent security reviews and potential third-party integrations.

This is a really strange move by them especially with the whole age verification fiasco. You’d think that they’d be trying even harder to prove that minors can’t use the service in an “unsafe” way
This seems strange to me especially after them wanting to have age verification on their software.
What if this is meant more to businesses to use rather than everyday consumers?
I don’t care much because I won’t be using discord anyways
i just deleted my discord channel today
i dont want people uploading their ids and stuff to join my channel so i just killed it
Oh yeah, give me your ID for this random server, but don’t worry, it’s totally safe! Meanwhile, your local clinic might be running on a 10-year-old laptop with no firewall. Makes you wonder why we’re so quick to panic about one and not the other.
Maybe the real issue isn’t the ID upload itself—it’s who’s asking for it and how they’re (not) protecting it.
I’m not sure that this is surprising or anything like that. This feature was a thing before the recent wave of age verification, and something that even third party Discord clients could make use of. Now (according to the article) they’re just making it mandatory instead of tolerating outdated clients.
I’ve always hypothesized that companies with goals contrary to privacy could still benefit from implementing E2EE on their platforms. Upon receiving a subpoena, the administrative burden is simply to say you don’t have access to the conversations, which is true. And as is often the case, the metadata of who you’re speaking with is more valuable than the exact contents of your conversations
The wonderful thing is that everyone benefits from it, and it is worth rooting for as it hugely normalizes encryption. Discord’s userbase is huge; a huge amount are normies who think encryption is only used by big evil criminals
I love this. Be the change you want to see.
If that’s the case why did Instagram go through the trouble of removing E2EE recently?
I dunno, I’m not Meta. Actual reporting says:
“Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months. Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.”
… which would actually make sense. Encryption in Instagram was opt-in. The amount of people who simultaneously use Instagram and also care about their messages being private are probably not many, so it literally cost more to maintain for no reason
Regardless though, it wouldn’t disprove my claim. Instagram discontinuing E2EE is an exception to the rule, so far, as there’s E2EE in a bunch of apps from companies who you don’t expect it from
They do care, they just don’t know they care….
