Data usage with a new phone that is switched off

Hi, I’m a tech newbie and my English is quite poor. Sorry for that. I still hope that you will be able to understand my issue and help me. Thanks in advance!

I bought a brand new Google Pixel 8a in person in a trustworthy retailer November the 5th. One week later, when I checked the phone settings, I noticed something strange: there was a WiFi data usage in September. How is it possible if the phone was supposed switched off (with factory setting)?

Just a clarification: the day I bought the Pixel, I turned it on and connected it to my other phone’s mobile broadband. However, I didn’t do the set up and turned it off right away because the battery was low. It’s only a few hours later that I really started the installation process. Is it the reason why 64 bits were used (considering the real date wasn’t defined yet when I first turned it on)?

Is it safer to try to return the article? I still have 4 days left to do that.

Everything is fine, this is normal.

Thank you. Out of curiosity, could you explain what is it please?

Actually, I learned so many things about privacy and security thanks to this website but I still need to harvest even more knowledge in order to not worry for nothing :s

Not really, your OS used 64 bytes for something, but I have no idea for what exactly.

It should be 64 bytes if I’m not mistaken. A byte is typically one ASCII character so it’s really a very small amount of data and nothing to be concerned about. I couldn’t tell you why 64 bytes was used though.
