I don’t think he necessarily deserved it, but it was inevitable in my mind. It just kept happening, over and over. He was going to do it to someone with a big enough audience eventually.
I thought about not saying anything about this for obvious reasons but I do not believe that I have to “self censor” in order to keep everyone happy.
I’m not surprised by the contents of those DMs in that video having experienced the very same thing first hand. I mean that exactly, right down to every accusation aimed at Louis. Including the accusations of being responsible for the swatting, threats of releasing personal information and using GrapheneOS assets to hurt our organization (website, domain, tweets etc). There were some very wacky suggestions from Micay about what he should do to his “adversaries”, which without a doubt would have violated laws. My only response to that was to caution against such actions and try to direct his attention to focusing on the GrapheneOS project. I haven’t said anything about these things publicly as I figured that it was something he said in the “heat of the moment” and that he didn’t really mean it and it was best if it were forgotten.
We do not condone any of the harassment that Micay has unfortunately received. I had reminded him numerous times that “feeding the trolls” is without a doubt making it a whole lot worse and giving them exactly what they want, a reaction. I am certain that nobody would even know about (or even remember) the original Techlore video if Micay did not regularly mention it.
Micay wanted me to either leave Privacy Guides or somehow fire @Jonah. Removal of any member, is a group decision, and there simply isn’t any grounds for that. Micay genuinely believed that somehow Jonah’s affiliation with Techlore (infrastructure management) meant that he had a say in the content of Henry’s previous videos. I refused to facilitate his ultimatums, wished him the best for his project and really hope that the problems are sorted out in an adult fashion. As a result I’ve been banned from all the GrapheneOS matrix rooms and unbanned about 2-3 times when Micay felt like I was helping him, as I have in many cases defended the project. When I wouldn’t do what he wanted though, I’d find myself banned again, until ultimately I decided not to rejoin those rooms.
I told him that I hope that he gets the support he needs, perhaps more so than what he wants. I am also a fan of the GrapheneOS project as a whole, because the way I see it, there really isn’t anything with a comparable feature set.
I think his paranoia is an integral part of his security genius.
Paranoia is a useful survival strategy in highly dangerous environments. Whether that’s a jungle filled with predators, a murderous political regime, or a digital landscape saturated with fraud and bad actors, it can keep you alive and in possession of your livelihood.
Throwing a tantrum is only a useful strategy for manipulating doting caregivers. It’s useless against those who aren’t sufficiently invested in you. There’s nothing “genius” about Micay’s ill-considered attempts to demand things from generally independent strangers.
I recommend to listen to the latest episode of the Closed Network Podcast.

Well outlined view on the situation without fear mongering.
Were you replying to my post? If so, you read in a whole lot of mishmash that I didn’t even imply.
I suppose I was replying to the whole situation more so than your post. I don’t get how a guy who’s so paranoid (maybe in fact he isn’t) expects people to comply with his insistences.
Personally, I think this is something really good. Toxicity has no place in the FOSS community. We’re supposed to focus on fighting big data, not on fighting one another.

Hi, sorry for reviving this old post. There was some comments here about giving the project time to assess better the future of the OS. I think it may passed time enough to start building some opinions.
I’ve been using GrapheneOS on my phone for about a year. This system is insane stable and well maintained. To a point that I really start actually be concerned about their excellence. I know that the GrapheneOS Foundation is a non profit organization founded in March 2023 in Canada. They have quite a challenging history with a company that incorporated and sponsored the project which is disclosed in their website. Now as a non profit organization they count with donations and multiple companies collaborating with the project. I couldn’t find more details about the companies that are supporting them. Also, I’m not sure how the project is getting audit. Does anyone has some information about those things? Don’t get me wrong I love this project and I just don’t want to blindly trust something that I interact daily.
I love the project too and wouldn’t want to use anything else.
As for auditing:
Thanks, I think this addresses my trust issue. Again, thanks for sharing this documentation that I missed. Their work is one of the best that I saw in my life.
Remember, they stand on the shoulders of giants. Google is doing most of the heavy lifting to make AOSP a great operating system. The Graphene team does excellent work, too, of course. It’s just not all them on their lonesome.
As of now, Daniel Micay is back to develop GrapheneOS.
I didn’t bother to look, at how far back that reaches, but everybody that likes to avoid the project for the sake of not trusting this person should be notified.
I personally just stumbled over all this a hot minute ago and found almost all the online sources pointed to him leaving, and no one to him coming back (silently.)
You misunderstood their announcement. He has never been away as a developer.
It’s one of the reasons you should use GrapheneOS, not against it.
If you simply read this thread, you would have known that he just stepped down as lead dev. Nothing more.
I’m surprised you were able to post despite the post being hidden, gave a bit of insight ey.
I don’t want to debate Micay but that is backwards.
Please don’t necro ancient news posts when nothing whatsoever has changed.
