Browsers criteria

Can you explain to me sincerely why do you think that we we requiring the desktop browsers to be open-source ?
Because then I would like to see if those reasons could apply to mobile browsers too. My guess is that yes…

That would be great, but I believe the reason it isn’t a requirement is due to Safari. On iOS, there isn’t any benefit to using other browsers as explained in the recommendation for Safari and Safari hardening.

Unfortunately, Safari itself isn’t open source, so in order to include Safari, there can’t be an open-source requirement here.

Because PG only recommends one open source browser, which is Mull. Brave has proprietary libraries, and Safari is proprietary.

I also thought about this but if there is valid reason to require open-source browser for desktop and that this is also valid for mobile, we should probably put it as a criteria instead of customizing the criterias to make a tool pass the requirements.

I agree, and this is also the case with the password managers section.

Sometimes it’s good to not have everything as a hard requirements, but weigh different aspects of a service or program, like in the case of browsers. While this means that it won’t be as easy to understand certain decisions, it also values the inherent complexity of these products and decisions.
