Hey! I’m looking into browser fingerprinting and found this shady little piece of software: hydraveil.net
I’m not going to install this software… but its premise its interesting: It manipulates some of the fingerprint parameters, controlling the fingerprint “at will”.
A few questions:
Are there any better alternative software than this?
With Linux, could I do this myself with a “simple” script? I’m guessing just manipulating the fonts and canvas would be enough to be uniquely different between each browsing session.
For Time Zone specifically, is there an easy way to change my “browser timezone” to my VPN timezone? This seems like a dead give away that I’m using a VPN if my server time zone doesn’t match my browser timezone?
Yes there are other similar extensions but you will spend most of the time trying to setup a configuration that will keep you “protected" or “anti fingerprintable" because any site that has even a single web developer that knows what their doing and intends to fingerprint you is going to not allow access to the site while you have the extension enabled. Which will require you to slowly lower the randomization, disable certain aspects until pretty much you mind as well have just whitelisted the website. Then there’s the sites who aren’t trying hard to track the shit out of you where maximum protection and settings will work just fine for you and you can continue on browsing the web feeling good knowing that you have maximum protection and are fooling the hell out of all the sites that aren’t worried about tracking you all that much. Then you’ll go to another one of your go to websites and you won’t be able to login or even view the website because it detects funny business going on. So then your back to trying to tweak things again. Which you mind as well just disable JavaScript and browse the internet. There’s max protection right there!!!
Privacy focused browsers have anti fingerprinting features and in my opinion. It really is the best way to go. They know what they are doing and the web is still usable. Trying to mess around with an extension (that almost all recommend you leave the settings at the default for the same use ability reason) and eventually, you will come to the same conclusion and just not bother with them anymore! The more that your circumvent things the more you make yourself stand out. So it is kind of counter productive. That’s just my worthless two cents. I’m 99% sure that you will come to the same conclusion after awhile. Save yourself the time! Cheers!
