This is an evolution of Forgetful Browsing. It only clear explicit data like cookies and stored data, but also implicit data like network cache. For now only available on iOS.
Interesting that this would come to iOS first, I wonder if that indicates Brave is leveraging some Webkit or Safari feature to accomplish this.
How’s this compare to “Forget me when I close this site” setting on other platforms (Android, Linux, Windows)?
From the article:
What data does Shred delete?
Shredding deletes both data explicitly stored by the site (e.g. cookies and local storage) and implicit data (e.g. network-related caches). To make sure Shred clears as much data as possible, Shred will also clear local data stored using so-called private WebKit APIs.
I would still be very surprised if the same thing can’t be achieved on other platforms given WebKit’s reputation for being fairly limited.
It appears to be an incremental extension of that feature.
I don’t know what the practical relevance or significance of deleting “implicit data (e.g. network-related caches)” or which threat models this would be relevant to.
They say in the article they can’t do everything they want on Safari, so yes.
