Best Small Portable Router to Use with GrapheneOS (No SIM Privacy Setup)

Hi all,
I’m running a GrapheneOS phone with no SIM card, using VoIP (like MySudo or any recommendations are welcome) to make and receive calls/SMS over Wi-Fi. I avoid all cellular tracking or SIM-based threats (like silent SMS, SS7, or baseband exploits).

To stay connected securely while mobile, I’m looking for a portable, small travel router or hotspot device that:

  • Can tether to public Wi-Fi or have its own LTE/5G SIM (optional)
  • Supports VPN (ideally IVPN or OpenVPN/WireGuard)
  • Is compact, reliable, and works well with GrapheneOS over Wi-Fi

Does anyone have a recommendation for a secure, privacy-respecting portable router that pairs well with this kind of setup?

Thanks in advance!

have you look at Gli.net travel routers ?:

They may run openwrt firmware.

You may also want to look at the Calyx Institute internet membership if you don’t have an unlimited data plan yet, or are planning to replace your internet entirely. Otherwise, I recommend getting a separate travel router mentioned in the above reply.

The value is so good, even members of the RV and van-life community are using it for mobile internet. Cost is high up-front but it amounts to around 46 USD per month.

Here is the list of hotspot models they offer: Hotspot models - Calyx Institute
