Best Android Browser Configuration (Poll!)

I am struggling to choose a web browser (or, rather, three) for use on my phone (running GrapheneOS). I have tried all of the options below, but each had a different and slight issue that led me to jumping ship several times.

In my setup, there would be three browsers:

  • One for general browsing (Mullvad on desktop)
  • One for fussy websites (Vivaldi on desktop)
  • One for PWAs (I clear my cookies, but I want my PWAs to stay signed in)

So, what do you use? And what settings do you use? If you use extensions, which ones? And how are they set up?

  • Brave
  • Cromite
  • Fennec
  • Firefox
  • Firefox Klar/Focus
  • Iceraven
  • IronFox
  • Termux (Lynx, w3m, etc.)
  • Privacy Browser (from F-Droid)
  • Tor Browser
  • Vanadium
  • Other (please say)

My recommendation given the current landscape is appropriately splitting your browsing across:

  • Vanadium with a strict DoH provider
  • Tor Browser for Android set to at least Safer with uBlock Origin.

If you need any added separation, use a private space or a separate user profile with their own browsers.

Reasons to not use:

  • Brave: filled with junk
  • Cromite: can be slow to update
  • Fennec/Firefox/Iceraven: no per-site process isolation after years
  • Firefox Klar/Focus: can’t use uBlock Origin
  • IronFox: changes too much
  • Termux: this isn’t realistic
  • Privacy Browser: a webview browser
  • Chrome/Edge/Opera/Vivaldi: proprietary

@SkewedZeppelin can you elaborate? Because IronFox is my main browser for ~6 months and can’t complain.

If you do have GOS on your phone, why having something extra on top of Vanadium?
I’m not sure what people might be missing from that browser.

But maybe I’m not a huge PWA/push notifications user (from PG for example) and do most of my browsing on desktop.

slight issue

Got an example for this? What are your limitations? :hugs:

Brave is quite decent because you can sync it with your desktop browser, it has a few extra useless fluff indeed but I feel like it has sane defaults.

they’re better than most but still not great

Well, Vanadium is nice, and I do have DNS-level ad and tracker blocking, but the experience is far better in Cromite (ABP), Brave, and IronFox (UBo), not to mention more effective.

As in, you have less ads/tracking and the browsing is faster or alike? :hugs:

Less ads/tracking.

Brave has recently added a ā€˜Customise menu’ [1] option to customise the hamburger menu[2]. It doesn’t change the settings, though.

  1. Settings → Display → Appearance → Customise menu ā†©ļøŽ

  2. Main menu and Page actions ā†©ļøŽ

what would you recommend for a strict DoH provider in a gos / vanadium setup?

Checking the DNS recos and the VPNs sounds like a good start for those.
Any recommendations here would pretty much be subjective. :hugs:

Some could also be self-hosted after reading more about the topic.

Update

I have read both this poll and the one on Techlore, and I have put together a new stack:

  • Vanadium as my main browser. By simply disabling JS and using a half-decent ad-blocking DNS, I can get a decent experience. In theory, the browser’s similarity to vanilla Chrome should also help me blend in with other Android users, though I should probably test this. As for difficult and unavoidable sites, I can just enable JS or use the Internet Archive; no secondary browser needed.
  • Brave as my main browser. Basically, Vanadium doesn’t have any sort of ā€œforget me when I close this siteā€ function, or even a ā€œclear data on closeā€ function. I could just use incognito mode for everything, but I’d definitely forget quite often. So, as the runner-up, Brave now takes Vanadium’s place.
  • IronFox for PWAs. I could probably get away with something simpler, but I am using Instagram as one of my PWAs (an unfortunate necessity, as my old friends do not use any other social media and the group chat has been fairly dead since 2024), so the presence of uBlock Origin and Greasemonkey are quite handy. I also find that Invidious works a little better under Gecko, but that’s probably just me.
  • Tor Browser for extra privacy and hidden services. I will rarely, if ever, be using this on my phone unless something quite bad happens, or if someone gives me a .onion link.
  • Privacy Browser for eepsites. I use I2P even less often than Tor, and I mainly just explore it rather than use it. Privacy Browser, while WebView-based, does a better job of linking up with i2pd than other browsers I’ve tried.

Why not XYZ?

  • Brave - I was prepared to use this if there were enough people saying I should, but between Eich, their AI, and their crypto, I’m not in any great rush.
  • Cromite - It has no place in my stack. Vanadium Brave is a better fit for general browsing, IronFox is better at restricting Instagram, and the Tor Project doesn’t recommend using anything other than Tor Browser to access the network.
  • Firefox - Mozilla are, in my opinion, moving away from the privacy-centric user-first company I used to know with their increased telemetry and AI features. As such, I don’t want to use Firefox; although in the case of Firefox forks, it’s quite the opposite.

I’ll be leaving this poll open, because data is beautiful and my preferences will probably change over time.

Thanks, everyone!

I use Brave on desktop, with multiple profiles: one for random browsing, one for logins/pwa, etc

For regular browsing on Android I use monocles Browser/Privacy Browser because it has Javascript disabled by default and removes everything after you close the app, which is very strong for privacy. I also use Brave on Android as and sync it with the logins profile on desktop, as well as using it as a backup browser.

I don’t use many extensions (only ProtonVPN and ProtonPass).

Brave it’s useful for me to sync tabs with my desktop browser and that’s why I only use Vanadium as a secondary browser.

For me, what’s missing is lack of import/export features for bookmarks.

You could always keep the bookmarks elsewhere: GitHub - linkwarden/linkwarden: āš”ļøāš”ļøāš”ļø Self-hosted collaborative bookmark manager to collect, read, annotate, and fully preserve what matters, all in one place.
@anonymous485

Only if you’re able to (and comfortable with) self host. Or willing to pay 3-4$/month, which is absurd if all you want is to sync bookmarks between your devices.

You can also old-school pen and paper write the bookmarks down otherwise. :hugs:

I would rather not.

Last time I tried Vanadium it could easily be fingerprinted on fingerprint[.]com/demo. Vanadium is a good recommendation for security but not for privacy so I’m surprised to see so many people here using it. I tested it with different VPN connections, clearing Vanadium’s app data and waiting between tests.
