For those that dabble in stocks and other financial securities, how do you stay updated when out and about?
I already have spreadsheets and comprehensive RSS feeds that takes way too long to read each day. And yeah, my brokerage technically has portfolio tracking if I choose to login.
But…
- I don’t want to login to my Brokerage app on my phone for security and privacy reasons, especially not regularly. If I need to place an emergency trade, I’ll login on Brave or Vanadium in incognito mode and still delete the browser data afterwards.
- I want to see stock quotes, basic charts, near real time data, etc.
- I want an easy access watchlist
- I like to track the value of my portfolio (I put my shares data in manually so I can see a near real time breakdown of my gains and losses.
- I want to be notified of major stock market news or specific company major news so that I don’t need to compulsively keep checking just to confirm nothing monumental is happening. Things like fed decisions, unemployment data, inflation data, trade stuff, earnings reports for market and sector dominating companies, and major price swings.
I currently use the yahoo finance app with an alias email. It functions moderately ok for the above criteria. To get notifications to work, it needs play services.
I’ve been making huge strides at moving to FOSS alternatives, but I’m really struggling with this one.
There are no alternatives to the broker’s app and TradingView. Just get a separate (e.g., old) phone for invasive apps and make the most of their features. If you want to stay up to date, you can use the StockEvents app—it doesn’t have any trackers. If you use a mobile browser instead of an app, you risk losing your money.
I have not seen any App that would be a FOSS solution to Yahoo Finance.
I presume your on GrapheneOS. Simple solution would be to install the app in your Private Space, with Google Play and Play Services there.
At least they can run in their own space, but not on your main profile. You can have the private space open till you choose to lock it away if you are needing those push notifications.
Alternative option, I do see Yahoo Finance is available as a Progressive Web App (PWA).
This would give you the privacy and security of the browser as a bonus, which you won’t get with the Yahoo app.
You could try with Vanadium adding it your home screen as PWA. Some PWA’s do notify you like the apps do, but if you don’t have Play Services in your main profile then you of course won’t get any notifications.
It depends mainly on your threat model of security versus convenience.
Are there alternative brokers that you might trust more with your privacy and security? That offer a more functional app?
There are services like Koyfin and Seeking Alpha. But these bring their own privacy issues.
yfinance might be the start of a FOSS solution. yfinance documentation — yfinance but it would need quite a bit of work to have the data available on your phone
