Any Ubiquiti Unifi users here? Safe and private Teleport/VPN?

I’m about to get started and build a Ubiquiti Unifi network as the house’s main network. I know it’s a closed system and will likely send telemetry back to Ubiquiti’s servers. However, for performance and integration reasons, I have decided this is the way to go.

One of the major selling points is the personal VPN option. I have a gigabit fiber optic connection at home. I’m hoping to use this while I’m in China to bypass their Great Firewall and to obtain the home IP address when streaming. Ubiquiti claims their Teleport VPN is secured and based on WireGuard. Would you guys trust this to be secure and private? Can I even replace Mullvad/Proton VPN with this? My thinking is no because even if I securely connect to the home network, my ISP/police can be spying on me. What do you guys think?

Besides the Teleport VPN, is there anything else I can do to secure and make my Ubiquiti equipment private?

I would trust it to be as secure and private as the rest of your Ubiquiti setup, and it sounds like you’ve already decided that’s acceptable :+1:

Yep. So it depends on how worried you are about this. If you already use a commercial VPN at home then you should probably keep using one. If you only use a VPN outside of the house and don’t bother at home, then Teleport could probably replace that setup.

Note that always connecting to your home IP will make you easier to track between different WiFi networks if the admins of those networks are working together. This is fairly unlikely, but still something to consider if you are concerned about your physical security.

Correct me if I’m wrong here. Using Mullvad and Proton, given what has been discussed, I feel very good about these two products and will likely use them until January 1, 2026, as that’s when my subscriptions end.

The Teleport feature seems very cool, but I don’t know if it’s as secure and private as Mullvad/Proton. My worry is that, let’s say I’m in China, and I use Teleport back to my home network. Let’s say Teleport’s implementation of Wireguard is as secure as the marketing says it is, what about the part where my home is connected to the ISP? If I wasn’t clear previously, this is the part that concerns me. Perhaps the state actor, say the FBI or CIA, won’t try to crack the Teleport/Wireguard connection to my home network, but my home is still connected to the ISP’s fiber optic network. It’s just a modem/router that is between my home and ISP. I’m worried this is the weak point where my connection can be tapped or hacked somehow. Is my concern legitimate or what? For streaming, I’m not worried, and this does seem like a good feature for that. However, for web browsing, or let’s say I want to post political opinions, I want to do it safely and privately, especially in this political climate in the US. I’m not concerned about doing stuff like that when using Mullvad/Proton as I have a decent understanding of how that works. I’m still learning about Teleport and whether it can be trusted for usage. Another added benefit of Teleport that I can think of is the lower likelihood of captchas when using Google as I won’t be using a commercial VPN IP.
