Android, iOS, and WiFi SSID privacy?

I’m reading that both Android and iOS collect all WiFi SSIDs that it scans. Is this true? I’m assuming the data is collected and then uploaded to both Apple and Google’s servers and is then associated with the user accounts? Is there a way to disable this or mitigate the danger from this activity?

What danger do you reckon this has?

Yes it’s an optional setting in both iOS and Android. Network BSSIDs are basically public information so I wouldn’t worry about it. In both cases it’s anonymized and not associated with user accounts.

Other people besides Apple and Google also make databases of WiFi networks just by driving around and recording them, it’s called wardriving.

It’s interesting that you say that, but aren’t some people worried enough that they say use public WiFi for sensitive and private stuff, including setting up GOS?

It wouldn’t matter if you use public WiFi or not, it’s not connecting to the WiFi it’s just scanning for nearby networks, tagging them with GPS and sending it to the database to help with location accuracy.
