Android head unit privacy

I have a bought a Chinese Android head unit for my car. The manufacturer claims that it’s Android 14, but after installing DevCheck on it, it says it’s Android 10.

What could I do to improve the privacy/security on this device. Is it possible to install a custom ROM on this device? If not, is it possible to debloat it using ADB?

I’ll be honest I think you will have better luck on xdaforums they know way more about head units and Android automotive then most of us here on PG forum.

I think the best thing you can for security is too keep it up-to-date and if the device isn’t getting updates anymore keep it offline. And disable things you don’t use.

For privacy it should be possible to side-load apps so just use the normal android apps recommendations like.

OsmAnd/CoMaps/Organic Maps for Maps.

NewPipe/Tubular/BravePipe for Youtube.

AntennaPod for Podcasts. Etc.

I have seen people do it but I have no idea if it depending on device.

Sadly they’re no GrapheneOS, DivestOS or LineageOS for Android automotive that I know of. But should be possible to install a custom ROM. I think your best bet is to ask xdaforums about ROMs.

If you feel like it you can also try compiling AOSP for Android automotive.

I’ve have been thinking about (but not really searching about) Raspberry Pis on car head units. It should be powerful enough for car related task.

How?

There was OpenAuto but it was killed/bought years ago.
