The investor group wants an “assessment of privacy and civil rights risks, including discrimination or wrongful detention from misuse of customer data,” according to the proposal seen by Reuters.

(…)

“Such practices may expose the Company to financial and legal risks, including potential data breaches and enforcement of evolving state privacy laws,” shareholders said in the proposal.

Damn, a company finally realized the importance of the data they collect, and the potential impacts of data collection (for the people whose data is collected, the risks associated with storing data,…) !

Would be simpler if Home Depot was collecting less informations in the first place though…

Like other retailers, Home Depot collects demographic information including age, race, ethnicity and gender from companies that provide services on its behalf for fraud prevention, security and asset protection, according to its website.

How would they know this unless their cameras are running algorithms? It seems like Flock cameras do analyse humans, not just cars. You don’t need to track any of those characteristics for the purposes they claim. Criminals come in all shapes and sizes. Traditional license plate readers aren’t the problem here either. Those are public facing identifiers law enforcement already had access to.

Maybe it’s possible via names ans surnames, shopping information, IP adresses, home address, social graphs.

That is true but none of those categories would reveal ethnicity. It feels like there is a missing piece of the puzzle they are only alluding to. I’d be surprised if illegal immigrants are giving personal details to the retailer outside sanctuary cities. They are connecting Flock to the arrests. And the workers aren’t customers. They are standing outside looking for work.

You’re right, my bad. As you can see I’m not from the US, I did not even know what was Home Depot before reading this article haha.

I only know about it from watching Family Guy and SouthPark

Where I’m from someone would cut down those Flock cameras overnight.

We have the highest CCTV per capita in Europe, but anything on a pole tends to disappear.

I don’t condone these actions of course. Most houses have doorbell cameras, so it is a futile gesture. Totally reprehensible in fact. We need more cameras, ideally placed around our leaders houses. For safety. Being watched 24/7 keeps us safe and secure, right?
