Aloha Browser

I appreciate your reply!

Funnily enough I just started using Aloha on my iPad and it comes with a in-built VPN like Vivaldi. For some reason they gave me a 7 day premium trial even though I didn’t ask for anything!

Does anyone have much experience with Aloha? It has a PIN code on the App so whenever it’s opened the user must enter the correct PIN code.

Keep in mind the Aloha Windows app and Android/iPad apps work very differently. The Windows App VPN will alter the ip address of all apps running on the Windows PC while the Android/iPad apps exclusively change the Aloha app ONLY.

Am I wrong, or it is actually FOSS in a way?

They don’t seem to state this on their website, but others say so and they also have a GitHub

WOW, looks like you’re spot on:

Really cool, so bad they don’t have a Linux app.

Maybe will try it in a Window$ VM tho, to see how it works.

The question I always ask everyone with these niche tools is “why?” What is this offering you that established options like Brave or Firefox Focus or hardened Safari etc aren’t?

I’ve been using Aloha on mobile for years. It has a some really cool privacy features, like the fact that all your downloads are locked in the browsers and not accessible by other apps. That said, I don’t personally think it’s ready to be on PG’s recommendation list. I don’t remember if it’s still the case, but I remember seeing ads. Moreover, they have been in beta for like a decade. I don’t know what they are waiting for to be out of beta. They also have an AI incorporated in the browser, and I’m personally not convinced they are primarily motivated by privacy.

Oh no!

:frowning_face_with_open_mouth:

Maybe they changed it after going FOSS.

What I want is more features. This is what my workflow is based one ( I use the browser 90% of the time BTW)

None of the browsers you mentioned have enough customisation and the features I need. They aren’t meant for that.

Ook if customization why not Zen or Floorp over this?

Because:

  1. Floorp and Zen don’t have mobile versions
  2. Why not being open to alternatives, when finding out about them? (IK Aloha isn’t an alternative because of the lack of Linux support, but this is still a good thing to do)

You don’t want to try iOS/Android Apps??
EDIT:
This link goes into more detail than the link I originally posted:

I’ve downloaded Aloha for Android and it DOES have the option in settings to do a system-wide vpn, but defaults to using the vpn inside the Aloha app only.

I use the laptop much more than the mobile, so it would actually break my workflow to move to another browser only on mobile, without the ability to sync the browser data between the two.

System-wide vpn is a paid feature. Many features are locked out and they have not given a clear distinction between free and paid features.

Aloha Premium

Snippet of premium features

I think they mean they support multiple connections per single download.
As opposed to simply multiple downloads at a time.

yuck.
I see zero reason to use this over Brave. (not that I recommend Brave, I don’t)
It isn’t even really open source either: they threw up a single squashed commit for just the Chromium bits of an old version onto GitHub and called it a day it seems. That shows such great commitment.
