Age verification is spreading in 2026

First they came for adults site and social media; now they are already discussing about putting VPNs and app stores behind #AgeVerfication :united_kingdom::australia:

What’s sold as “online safety” means #surveillance via IDs checks or face scans.

Privacy & anonymity protect journalists, whistleblowers & activists.

We must fight against age verification - or the free web dies!

I wonder how many services will require that but it’s an extra reason to get rid of a few of my old platform-y accounts. :woman_shrugging:t2:
Sad because some of them do have nice people/communities but yeah, until they move elsewhere I’d still stay away from there. :+1:t2:

Worst one I’ve encountered recently is Tixel. I have to verify my ID before I can contact their support team.

The whole tickets ecosystem is quite awful as a whole yes.

DICE are Twickets are still decent, but yes, apps like Ticketmaster and Tixel ruins the ecosystem. And tickets are also spread across multiple platforms, it feels like there are hundreds of Ticketmasters. They also made it incredibly difficult to delete my account.

Never understood why this is a thing to begin with.
I guess people that go to concerts/events really would give anything to see their favorite performers and are fine giving away all of their privacy?
Sad that there is an entire business model based on that hobby…

Despite all of the new laws enacted recently nothing has changed in my browsing habits. Over time the accessible internet will become smaller and smaller. Eventually I will rely on peer to peer connections and older software. If I need to use ID or biometrics to connect I’ll give up my internet access. I can always pay someone else to download software updates or a month worth of YouTube videos.

I don’t have any form of valid ID and refuse to turn on my webcam. No government has the right to dictate how I access information and software. I can download hundreds of DRM free games, terabytes of pornography, dozens of LLMs, thousands of movies, and all of the music ever produced. This will only hurt the economy and creative sectors. My digital purchases are taxed and keep developers employed. They also pay taxes.

I’m not hopeful for the future. Either we course correct or become like North Korea. If we can demonstrate the futility of it all then things might change but I won’t hold my breath.

Not gonna lie, here in Costa Rica not having those laws is a blessing of course, but at the same time I feel concerned that in any moment laws may change and we get these shitty laws here too. It’s like a bomb slowly ticking without a timer.

I saw recently in the news a headline about PDFiles in Roblox grooming children in this country, and that make things even worse, because that’s just more logs thrown to the fire and it serves as a motivation to politicians to think about importing these laws here.

We all know that the approval of these laws is damn pointless, because at the end of the day criminals breathe the same air we breathe too, so in this case we gotta ban the fucking air too! Does that make any sense!?

And in top of that here in Latin America nobody gives a shit about privacy; and I don’t have any idea about the demographics of privacy, but stereotypically speaking seems like Europe and the US are the most privacy-savvy regions even if they don’t look like so.

That’s why if you master a secondary language (in this case, Spanish) it’ll be very good and helpful, because the problem is not just in Europe, Australia, the UK and other countries, we’ll be next. Especially taking in mind that resources to fight back and defend our privacy are accessible almost just in English.

OT

And yeah, I know I have a website, but nowadays people is more into audiovisual content, and I don’t have the money to afford equipment for that type of content. I can’t even write blogs with a decent wording! :joy: But no excuses, I can find stuff on YT anyway. I’ll do my best to get back in track in this project and start writing.

More OT

BTW a couple months ago, the news outlet Diario Extra (Extra Newspaper) reported that Costa Rica is ranked as one of the most unsafe countries in the world in terms of cybersecurity.[1] It’s kinda concerning because this country is trying to push you into modern alternatives, like paying your bus pass with your card using SINPE Móvil, which is ironically unsafe… Now imagine what would happen if we get Age Ver. laws here…
