Short description

It’s a GNU package, that is helps in messaging.

Why I think this tool should be added

It is E2E encrypted and runs without a central server (except for user discovery, my guess) via P2P directly between the users with support for Voice and Video calls and requires no data to create an account.

Real time communication

Has the tool been audited by an independent firm? Without that, it cannot be added.

As seen in the requirements for messaging services:

No, As far as I found, they plan to do it after the implementation of Group chats which is still in experimental phase.

Something I could find regarding its encryption - cryptography - How does Jami (formerly Ring.cx) really work, and how secure is it? - Information Security Stack Exchange

Last time I used this which was some time ago it was quite brittle and the installer didn’t even remove it properly. It used to be on the previous site many moons ago.

We don’t add things which anticipate getting an audit until they do.

Fun fact: Jami is like 20 years old, but that may be ship of Theseus.

it also has/had some nasty issues:

it is my understanding that a ton of metadata can be learned by anyone being part of dht

also on mobile since the dht approach ruins batteries they just have their apps default proxy all dht requests through their server which defeats the purpose imo

How do you feel about rhe “letterbox” approach used by Briar?

@Niek-de-Wilde
it took like 6 years too long to ship
and I wish it wasn’t single-user focused and instead was able to be a mailbox for your friends/family

but otherwise is fine
