Ability/Capacity of Wiretapping

Hi Privacy Guides Community,

Is it possible for cellular service providers to tap on their subscribers conversations?

I mean straight from their headquarters somehow, without the involvement of the known methods like using an application/software installed on the target cellular telephone, or a physical device attached to a landline telephone?

Any ideas?

Conversations over voice or SMS? Yes

Aside from whatever they might already have in place, any attacker could listen in with access to the right infrastructure.

Okay, but is it actually impossible for voice calls?

Thank you

@jonah Okay, but is it actually impossible for voice calls?

Thank you

Traditional telephone calls should be end-to-end encrypted already. It should be the standard for telephone conversations, it’s something really disappointing that we can’t count on this yet. I wonder if it will be possible someday in the near future. :slightly_smiling_face:

“Possible” and “going to happen” are different things. Especially with the current censorship efforts happening globally, I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Signal is great for E2EE calls - the hard part is just getting others to join you.

@hashcatHitman I agree with you, under this global censorship happening right now and surveillance nightmare it’s hard to believe it’s going to happen. :frowning:

Thank you for your ideas :slightly_smiling_face:

Happy to help. Good luck with your journey.
