A list of private and secure browsers to use?

My position has always been to do whatever I can to use the web browser rather than download an app. Of course, a private and secure FOSS solution is acceptable.

Currently, I use Brave, Firefox with UBO, Ironfox, and Waterfox for most of my browsing. I check my emails in a web browser. It’s too bad there aren’t containers, so I generally use one browser for each email account. I do use Google Chrome, but only for logging into my bank accounts since there’s no privacy to speak of, and Google Chrome is reported to be very secure. I’ll be doing this with Vanadium as well. Are there any other browsers that the PG community is using? Can I trust Fennec?

I use Fennec and Librewolf too.

I forgot to mention that this is for both Android and iOS. Last I checked, Librewolf isn’t available on Android.

We usually point users to IronFox, since Firefox on Android is an entire different over engineered beast

Containers are now built into Brave 1.92 on all desktop platforms (Windows, macOS, and Linux)

I would avoid using this until the updates become much faster. It is still on release 152.0.4, while Firefox is on 154.0.1

I’m sort of curious as to why PG doesn’t put Fennec, Waterfox, and Ironfox on its list. Any other Firefox or Chromium-based browsers worth considering for privacy and security?

In terms of security, can I trust Microsoft Edge, Samsung Browser, and Opera for a similar use case as Google Chrome, where privacy isn’t important, but security is like banking, government, work email/messaging, etc.?

Edge is generally pretty good for security when on Windows

Why is privacy not important for government and banking?

Quite secure, but a privacy nightmare. One-time configuration is not enough, you would need to check each update for new invasive features.

What are the invasive features in Edge?

Because the banks and government already have my personal information, I need to use them to log in. So what am I gaining with a privacy browser over Chrome or Edge?

I would argue, because both government stuff and banking are tasks for which you have you fully identify yourself anyway?

It wouldn’t convince me to use Edge or the sort, but there is little to do in terms of anonymity for those two specific types of chores.

What about privacy against the browser vendor? Or third-party analytics in government/banking websites? These are parties you still want to give as little information about you as possible. Ergo you still need a browser which protects you in this way.

That’s identification/anonymity, not privacy.

There are diminishing returns in that scenario. You do you then. I’m not convinced there is any practical advantage considering the government and banks have my personal information and have KYC me already. It’s not like they know what else I’m doing on my computer. You could use the most private browser in the world, but I don’t believe it’ll help because they still know what you’re doing on your account. For this use case, I value security more than anything. My government and bank accounts need to be accessed safely, period.
