Now there’s going to be even more demand for frontends like Invidious, I’m not sure the instance maintainers will be able to handle so much activity.
Given Google’s push for more advertising money and Kid-friendly content, they are definitely going after these instances like it’s a whack-a-mole game.
Hopefully someone like Pewdiepie spreads the word about PeerTube
A video promoting or even mentioning PeerTube would probably get taken down for some community guidelines violation. And even if it didn’t, nobody watching would ever watch PeerTube because there isn’t anything to watch and if something is uploaded there, it’s probably a backup of a YouTube video.
Good point, hopefully the word spreads about PeerTube over other large social media platforms.
That’s kind of defeatist, like saying no one will ever use Signal because there’s no one to talk to. Signal managed to gain popularity because of its quality and the fact that well known people talked about it, even if it’s uncomfortable to adopt.
No, it’s not like that. It’s easy to adopt Signal but another video site with not even a small fraction of the content YouTube has will never have a chance of competing with YouTube especially since it is difficult to adopt. Most of the content uploaded onto PeerTube and also Odysee is reuploads of YouTube videos and privacy-wise, Invidious is probably better because instances can proxy YouTube videos and it doesn’t require JavaScript. It also doesn’t help that people like to associate alt tech with the far-right and terrorism.
Using Tor Browser to access Youtube anonymously may not be an option anymore. Private Youtube is on its last legs
@moderators
Could we make PeerTube vs Youtube a separate topic?
Off-topic
When you max privacy on Invidious by using a public instance, you put more load on already burdened maintainers and hurt the privacy movement overall. PeerTube is debuting native apps on platforms like Android, so security is improving
Even if adoption of Peertube may sound unrealistic, it’s the only sustainable solution we can get.
Make that a PeerTube vs Odysee vs Youtube topic
PeerTube currently depends on JavaScript to function (and even when enabled, the site is broken on Firefox-based browsers) and since it’s P2P, your IP address is exposed unless you’re connected to a VPN or Tor. A frontend or downloader could mitigate these risks but it’d be harmful to PeerTube instances.

At least the maintainers aren’t always in a critical scenario like the Invidious maintainers
I think any conversation about alternative video streaming services are relevant as long as YouTube/censorship is discussed somewhat. Feel free to create your own post if there are specific topics about peertube you want to discuss
