For most people the useful takeaway is not to panic, but to keep WhatsApp and the OS update path boring and current. Spyware campaigns like this are usually aimed at specific targets, but delayed updates and old phones make the easy wins easier. If someone has a higher-risk job or situation, I would also separate sensitive conversations from the same everyday phone as much as practical.
