I’m curious to learn more about instant messaging software. What are the basic requirements needed to use such software effectively? Also, how would you define instant messaging in simple terms?

It depends on what you mean by what basic requirements to use the software. If I understand correctly then basically the requirement is simple.
A server and a client act together to send a message through one client to the other. That’s how things like IRC Work.
There’s no different definitions of “Instant Messaging”, it’s a simply put one: “An application/service that you can use to send and receive messages between devices with a server acting as the middle man for send and receive”
