Anyone else tempted to start self-hosting by this news? I was a long time HBO Max subscriber but the price increases lately are insane. It’s even almost approaching what cable used to be.
I don’t have a Jellyfin NAS server yet, but I’m thinking of making a temporary one out of my old Raspberry Pi 4. No piracy for the record but I would like to at least have a decent streaming alternative for the stuff I already own.
That and the lack of targeted advertising is a win. There are so many times where I would move locations and suddenly lose access to certain shows because the ad-supported plan is not available in a region.
I’m always on the high seas matey! If buying isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing. The law doesn’t think so by common sense and human logic still applies.
Yeah.. I started self hosting my own streaming service in the past 18 months. It was high time. Finally free of the shackles of big tech corporate enshittification in one more way.
Streaming is truly trying to become the new cable. At this point, with ads coming to a lot of services and the neverending price hikes, it’s just becoming less and less usable by the day.
I used to do just this. This is an excellent use case to repurpose an SBC. Make sure you have at least a 4GB model though or else you will be truly RAM starved. I also recommend you run a cron job to restart your Jellyfin server once a day because the RAM usage can keep creeping up.

Piracy is actually never stealing because it is copyright infringement. Stealing implies that you took something tangible away from someone.
I offer stremio (do what you like with this information)
and bruh, I can see why they worked with my ISP. They knew they were gonna raise prices so they worked with my ISP to offer it for free in your ISP Subscription to make it more “value” for customers that have this specific ISP.
