US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere

The U.S. State Department is developing an online portal that will enable people in Europe and elsewhere to see content banned by their governments including alleged hate speech and terrorist propaganda, a move Washington views as a way to counter censorship, three sources familiar with the plan said.
The site will be hosted at “freedom.gov,” the sources said. One source said officials had discussed including a virtual private network function to make a user’s traffic appear to originate in the U.S. and added that user activity on the site will not be tracked.

They also plan to offer a VPN:

In a statement to Reuters, a State Department spokesperson said the U.S. government does not have a censorship-circumvention program specific to Europe but added: “Digital freedom is a priority for the State Department, however, and that includes the proliferation of privacy and censorship-circumvention technologies like VPNs."

Get ready to ditch Mullvad, Proton and IVPN. USA VPN review when?? /s off

Great. But that's fucking rich for them lmao.

I mean who wouldn’t want to use a VPN run by an aspiring authoritarian government that classifies political speech they don’t like as “domestic terrorism” and is openly (and warrantlessly) surveilling it’s own citizens?

edit: I think the “FREEDOM VPN” would pair nicely with the ‘ANOM phone’ or the ‘Freedom Phone’ maybe on the Trump Mobile network.

I think that would truly provide ultimate-maximum-military-grade-hacker-proof privacy and security!

This is about as sneaky as a Scooby Doo villain.

It’s definitely safe, they totally don’t have Room 641A running anymore and definitely nothing like that exists in any form! /s

If you take a liquor shot for every outrageous thing happening, you’ll definitely not remember anything by 2029 if that helps.

I would bet money that this is all going end end up centered on far-right messaging and platforms and giving far-right groups a way to coordinate.

Trump Media and Rumble have already done a lot of work looking at data centers near but not in the EU. Now they can be their own first client using taxpayer money, and the money is already spent by the time anything changes politically.

Problem is you wouldn’t even make it to 2029 doing that.

Sure, didn’t they gut the office that actually helps people circumvent censorship?

But because it helped people in dictatorships, it was bad.

This is just a move by the Trump administration to influce european politics, or to put it blunty, they want regime change.

“I would have gotten away with it if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!”:sweat_smile:

Does it include ICE apps lol

Maybe we can setup a similar VPN tunnel for the US to escape having no privacy on the internet
