This is how Discord Dies… [DeArrowed Title: How Discord's face-scanning AI may end up killing the website]

Even though this is from No Text To Speech a Discord Youtuber and while The focus is on discord and those laws, he does also finally put emphasis on what will happens to site in general (that includes potentially many forums such as PG, potentially) and finally whenever you hate him or not. I think we must agree that this whole age verification the goverments are proposing and the lawsuit is just getting utterly ridiculous

I really dont like Discord and want it to die so bad as a platform. We lost so much knowledge to Discord simply because generally a lot of devs are to lazy or cheap to start their own forum.

Instead of having a proper searchable forum with fixes for the worlds problems that could be indexed by Google and other search engines. A lot of solutions simply vanished to the ether never to be seen again by the public. General chat also does not give sufficient time to reflect on your thoughts, the things you want to say and think about how others will perceive your statements. Everything is about instant everything so a lot of nuance is lost.

I’d say its about time for Discord to die.

Devs working on FOSS without any pay being expected to provide a complete infra and knowledge transfer for no money - I would say it’s a product of the situation.

Also knowledge loss like this occurs due to IRC / Matrix, no?

Yes but you dont see normal people use it as much, while true, the absolute amount of knowledge lost is lesser compared to the amount of knowledge lost on Discord.

GitHub has a discussion/forum area. Why not use that instead if Discord?

Synchronous communication is different than asynchronous communication. Not to sidetrack further, but saying devs are lazy and cheap I feel isn’t the way we should think about it.

Derek Taylor (Distro Tube) just made a short video about this topic. It’s not just about free platform, problem is that this is not a proper way for this type of discussion. It consumes too much time, if you want to be active and respond to every question (which are often repeated).
And same is with IRC or Matrix. Forums or git issues are proper way
