Test our offline ZIM/Kiwix builds

Hi all-

If you use Kiwix, maybe you can poke around at our new automated ZIM builds and let me know if you encounter any issues. If all goes well these will be included in future releases.

We have published ZIM files in our releases for over a year now, but these new ones are much improved, as I was able to shave 70-130MB off the file sizes compared to our old files, include blog articles in the download, and include translated versions in the multilingual build.

The goal will be to distribute these files on GitHub, archive.org, and maybe eventually Kiwix’s official library.

Thank you very much, that’s a very good idea.

All links in the forum return a 404 error. The correct link is https://github.com/privacyguides/privacyguides.org/releases/download/2025.07.22/offline-privacy_guides.zim

Thanks for the tip, Kiwix. I wasn’t familiar with the software. There are already lots of other sites integrated there too.

Please keep it up, it’s a great idea.

brew install --cask kiwix
==> Auto-updating Homebrew

Adjust how often this is run with $HOMEBREW_AUTO_UPDATE_SECS or disable with
$HOMEBREW_NO_AUTO_UPDATE=1. Hide these hints with $HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_HINTS=1 (see man brew).
==> Installing Cask kiwix
Warning: macOS’s Gatekeeper has been disabled for this Cask
==> Moving App ‘Kiwix.app’ to ‘/Users/wetr/Applications/Kiwix.app’
đŸș kiwix was successfully installed!
==> No outdated dependents to upgrade!

No, that is not a correct link, the ones currently on GitHub are old releases. I will update the OP but here are working files from the new builds we are testing:

Name Size Modified
privacyguides.org_en_all_2025-08.zim 72 MiB 08/27/2025, 11:18:09 PM
privacyguides.org_en_articles_2025-08.zim 60 MiB 08/27/2025, 11:18:25 PM
privacyguides.org_en_kb_2025-08.zim 20 MiB 08/27/2025, 11:18:30 PM
privacyguides.org_mul_all_2025-08.zim 83 MiB 08/27/2025, 11:18:40 PM

privacyguides.org_en_all_2025-08.zim includes all pages and articles in English, and is probably the one most people want. The articles or kb downloads will only cover those sections specifically. The mul download will include offline translations and the language picker like the regular website has.

It’s bafflingly ironic that a privacy/security site staff prefers mirrors without trusted certificates over GitHub.

A part of the goal is to also avoid big tech products as much as you can or wherever you can.

You have a problem with triplebit? :stuck_out_tongue:

yep fortiguard.com/webfilter

Edit: Oh, I see :wink:

at the cost of the security? I’m sorry, but even self-hosted half-baked implementations can be propely set up.

wdym? This sounds like you are complaining about an issue on your end.
