Flock-style license plate reader vendor Leonardo announced a new system called SignalTrace that can fingerprint your wireless devices while you drive by and track you around without needing to see your license plate.
I like how they downplay the privacy violations by pretending these cameras only scan plates and not analyze entire video frames with AI 
What would be really bad is if private companies started all implementing stuff like this in public pointing at roads and such.
I could see flock paying businesses and private citizens to put their cameras pointing at roads. They already have contracts with Lowes iirc.
Local government can be changed, not easily but it can be. You’d have a hard problem preventing business from doing it on their property. Seems the legal system really likes to rule that there’s no expectation of privacy in public. I think that law needs an update based on modern technology advances. No reasonable expectation ≠ no privacy whatsoever should be possible in public.
Iirc Germany has laws regarding this. Problem is they can swing the hammer to harming free speech.

Even if we pretend they aren’t trying to scan RFID through the metal panels of your car, which should normally neutralize RFID, I’ve no idea how they could even pretend to scan a passive HF RFID signal, such as that of a credit card, from several meters away. Its range is a few centimeters, the signal-to-noise ratio is going to render the signal as unreadable noise at any larger range
